Assistant General Counsel, Personal Insurance – London & Singapore
Job Overview
Join us as an Assistant General Counsel in our London or Singapore office to take your career to the next level with a global market leader. Our Global Legal, Compliance and Regulatory (GLCR) team provides comprehensive legal advice to colleagues and functions across the organisation, ensuring AIG navigates an ever‑changing legal and regulatory landscape. The role supports the AIG Global Personal Insurance business (including Accident & Health and Warranty Service Programs) and involves leading time‑sensitive, highly visible projects that contribute to AIG’s strategic initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide comprehensive legal support to AIG’s Personal Insurance businesses and help them execute compliant strategies to achieve their business objectives.
* Coordinate with the various Centres of Excellence in GLCR (regulatory, compliance, governance, employment, litigation, reinsurance, product underwriting, data/digital, and others) to address issues that arise in those areas.
* Anticipate and advise on a wide variety of legal and regulatory risks associated with AIG’s Personal Insurance operations in the UK, EMEA and APAC.
* Provide practical advice on optimal pan‑jurisdictional insurance distribution structures and other outsourcing arrangements, and assist with all legal due diligence.
* Advise on agency and other distribution issues, remuneration arrangements, distance sales and related areas of law.
* Draft and review a wide range of agreements with licensed and unlicensed partners, including Delegated Underwriting Authority Agreements, Multi‑Jurisdictional Distribution Agreements, Claims Handling Agreements, Terms of Business Agreements, Broker Engagements, Facilities, Fees for Services contracts and Vendor agreements.
* Provide advice on product‑related legal matters, such as reviewing policy wordings, customer documents, marketing materials, customer/client communications and sales journeys, to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
* Manage regulatory requests, notifications and other filings, including escalated complaints, in collaboration with the relevant Regulatory team.
* Retain and manage instructions with panel firms and external counsel on relevant legal matters.
* Oversee the work provided by trainees or secondees.
* Assist on ad‑hoc projects as required.
* Provide technical training to business teams, focusing on developing legal and regulatory knowledge and awareness.
* Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders across the organisation.
Qualifications
* A UK‑qualified lawyer in good standing with a minimum of five years’ legal experience with a major law firm or a global insurer.
* Strong understanding of the insurance business and insurance regulation, including distribution.
* Demonstrated experience leading deals and closing contracts within aggressive timeframes.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Excellent critical‑thinking and problem‑solving skills.
* Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects and assignments in a fast‑paced environment with a strong focus on collaboration and independent work.
* Ability to handle confidential information with a high level of discretion.
