Diabetic Retinal Screener/Trainee Diabetic Retinal Screener, Band 4
We are looking to recruit a self-motivated, enthusiastic individual to join our Diabetic Eye Screening Team. Applicants will need to demonstrate the ability to work both independently and as part of a small team. You will need to be computer literate and have excellent interpersonal skills. Full training and support will be provided. The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator who is flexible and able to deal with a range of different people in their day-to-day work, some with very specific needs.
Responsibilities
* Undertake clinics across the county in settings including mobile clinical vehicles, GP Surgeries and Hospitals. Work confidently and independently and troubleshoot IT/technical issues during screening.
* Run clinics, measure visual acuity, take retinal photographs, administer eye drops and triage patients. Contribute to NDSEP (National Diabetic Eye Screening Programme) performance measures. Some administrative duties such as telephoning patients.
* Use own vehicle to travel between sites in the Gloucestershire area; drive department vans including mobile clinic vehicles as required. Required to work in mobile screening venues and transport equipment; valid UK driving licence and business insurance for your vehicle.
* Work some evenings and Saturdays on a rota basis. Demonstrate excellent time management and the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
* Some knowledge of ophthalmic imaging or Diabetic Eye Screening; training to work towards the diploma in Diabetic Eye Screening within 2 years and meet milestones.
* Must have current full UK driving licence and be able to drive department vehicles.
* Minimum of two A-levels or equivalent; one relevant subject (Biology, Science, Photography, etc.).
* Basic knowledge of diabetic retinopathy and diabetes risk factors; ability to indicate disease-positive images with training.
* Good communication within multidisciplinary teams and with patients; calm, empathetic and persuasive approach.
* Enhanced dexterity for clinical skills and use of diagnostic equipment (fundus cameras); IT proficiency with Windows software and diagnostic tools; keep up-to-date with professional developments and participate in audit/research activity.
* Ability to work independently, plan travel and clinic time, and maintain accurate patient records; handle image and data securely.
* Carry out movement of a digital fundus camera and equipment between county-wide surgeries; adhere to Trust policies and manual handling protocols.
Qualifications & Experience
* Essential: 2 A-Levels Grade A-C (or NVQ Level 3) in a relevant subject; current full driving licence; GCSE English and Mathematics at grades 9-4 (A-C) or equivalent.
* Desirable: NVQ Level 3 City and Guilds in Diabetic Retinopathy Screening.
* Essential: ability to cope with day-to-day pressure; experience with Microsoft Windows and Office; NHS experience is desirable.
* Essential: ability to travel to clinic locations across Gloucestershire using Trust vehicles; genuine interest in the Diabetic Retinal Screener role; ability to drive department vehicles with training.
Communication & Working Relationships
* Develop and maintain communication with the immediate team and other eye screening programmes in the UK.
* Multidisciplinary team within the Trust; ophthalmologists, diabetes team, patients; GPs, practice nurses, and other surgery staff.
* National Screening Committee for Diabetic Retinopathy; Trust IT department; external IT/camera/software support.
Most Challenging Part of the Role
Ability to work without direct supervision, manage high workload, maintain patient care and safety, handle images/data, and ensure timely data transfer to meet national standards. Occasional working Saturdays/evenings on a rota.
Physical Effort & Working Conditions
* Manual handling; manoeuvre equipment up to 86kg using trolleys; carry laptop (5-7kg) daily; move equipment between sites; work in darkened rooms with VDU use; concentration for prolonged periods; infection control and COSHH compliance.
