Band 6 specialist nurse in advance kidney care (AKC)
Are you a passionate and motivated nurse looking to develop your career in renal care? We are looking for an enthusiastic Band 6 Specialist Kidney Nurse to join our friendly and supportive advanced kidney care (low clearance) team.
This is an exciting opportunity to work with patients with advanced kidney disease from North central London, supporting them through treatment choices, education, and long‑term care. You will play a key role in delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred care.
Main duties of the job
* Liase with all key members of the multidisciplinary team to advise and support colleagues in the delivery of specialised patient care across professional boundaries.
* Undertake nurse‑led clinics for patients with advanced kidney disease; responsible for excellent standards of nursing care through the planning, co‑ordinating, delivering and evaluating nurse‑led clinics.
* Work with the support of clinical nurse specialists, lead nurses and consultants to deliver specialist clinical care appropriate to the needs of the patient group, based on principles that are research‑based and which enhance the quality of patient care.
* Contribute to the facilitation of the planning, delivery, and evaluation of care pathways for renal patients.
* Drive and coordinate training and education with a particular focus on promoting home‑based therapies for patients requiring renal replacement therapy.
* Promote and coordinate patient participation and peer support for patients within the service.
* Promote an innovative and progressive attitude to continual improvement of patient care through reviewing the evidence base and embedding this in practice with engagement in research activities.
* Participate in the development of staff within the multidisciplinary team by providing support, advice and formal and informal education.
* Assist in the research and audit process.
* Act as a visible role model.
* Work at all kidney care sites.
Person Specification
Education & professional Qualifications
* First‑level degree in nursing or working towards.
* Recognised teaching or mentorship qualification.
* Post‑registration qualification relevant to specialty – Renal Course.
* Master’s degree or working towards.
* Advanced assessment skills or willingness to undertake.
* Leadership course or willingness to undertake.
Experience
* Substantial post‑registration experience in area of specialty – Renal Nursing / Peritoneal dialysis.
* Experience of teaching junior members of staff.
* Experience of mentoring and assessing student nurses on placement.
* Previous experience of research and audit.
* Undertaken nurse‑led clinics.
Skills and Aptitudes
* Expert specialist skills for the post – Renal Nursing.
* Knowledge of current advances and pathways of care relevant to specialty.
* Excellent communication skills and ability to negotiate and influence.
* Skilled in use of computer/keyboard.
* Ability to problem‑solve, prioritise and work to deadlines.
