Overview
This job description sets out the professional duties and responsibilities for a Teacher - Special in alignment with the applicable regulations and school policies. The post holder is expected to promote good relations, equality of opportunity and pay due regard to equality legislation at all times.
Responsibilities
* Plan and prepare courses and lessons; teach pupils according to their educational needs; set and mark work; assess, record and report on pupil development, progress and attainment.
* Promote the general progress and well-being of pupils and provide advice and guidance on educational and social matters, including information about further education and careers.
* Make records and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils, and communicate and consult with parents and external bodies as approved by the employing authority and Board of Governors.
* Participate in meetings and contribute to the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, programmes, methods of teaching and assessment, and pastoral arrangements.
* Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references for pupils and participate in public examinations where required.
* Participate in staff development and performance review; review teaching methods and programmes; engage in further training and professional development.
* Advise and cooperate with the Principal and other teachers on curriculum, teaching materials, assessment and pastoral arrangements.
* Maintain good order and discipline, safeguard pupil health and safety, and participate in school meetings related to curriculum, administration and pastoral arrangements.
* Participate in arrangements for public examinations, pupil presentation and supervision during examinations.
* Contribute to management and administration tasks, including the appointment and development of staff, coordinating work, and involvement in curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions.
* Assist with administrative tasks related to duties described above, manage or supervise support staff, and handle equipment and materials.
* adhere to the required number of working days/hours, and comply with break times, with allowances for nursery settings as applicable.
* Provide staff cover for absent teachers in accordance with school policies and class size considerations.

Section 1 – Essential Criteria
* Qualifications/Professional Membership
Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
* Experience
Minimum of 6 months demonstrable experience using a range of effective classroom strategies to support and challenge EYFS children of all abilities, including those with Special Educational Needs; develop positive relationships for learning; work with professionals to meet SEND needs; use digital media/technology to enhance teaching and learning.
* Other
Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
Section 2 – Essential Criteria (Interview Stage)
* Knowledge
Knowledge of NI Curriculum; safeguarding and child protection; SEND Code of Practice and implications; current assessment methods for learners with SEND; approaches to positive behaviour for learning; IT systems and digital tools.
* Skills/Abilities
Effective teaching and classroom management; inclusive learning environment; initiative and problem solving; ability to work collaboratively and as part of a team; motivation for professional development; ability to engage with pupils, parents and community.
* Values Orientation
Evidence of alignment with the school’s values/ethos as described on the school website.
Section 3 – Desirable Criteria
* Qualifications and Experience
Studied SEND as part of teacher training; at least 1 year experience using diverse classroom approaches for EYFS with SEND; experience delivering a play-based early years curriculum; experience with language programmes (e.g., Makaton); experience monitoring pupil progress, interventions and target setting, including IEPs.
