Location: Gloucestershire (Remote, with occasional office visits – a couple of days per month) Salary: £50,000–£60,000 basic + share options and benefits

We are representing an ambitious SaaS startup looking to strengthen their security function. This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing organization where you will be the founding security hire, taking ownership of the company’s security and compliance practices from the ground up.
Role Overview
As a Security Engineer, you will be responsible for hands-on security operations as well as driving compliance initiatives. You will work closely with the engineering team to ensure cloud security best practices are applied while leading audits and certifications. This is a unique opportunity to combine technical expertise with GRC responsibilities and help shape the company’s security function as it scales.
Key Responsibilities
* Take ownership of the company’s security and compliance initiatives.
* Implement and maintain cloud security (AWS) best practices across the organization.
* Drive compliance with ISO standards, Cyber Essentials, GDPR, SOC 2, and other relevant frameworks.
* Conduct risk assessments, audits, and security reviews.
* Collaborate with engineering teams to integrate security into development and operational processes.
* Develop policies, procedures, and controls to strengthen security posture.
* Act as the go-to security expert across the business and advise leadership on security strategy.
Candidate Requirements
* Hands-on experience as a security engineer or equivalent role in a small team or startup.
* Experience with cloud security (AWS preferred) and related tooling.
* Knowledge of GRC frameworks, audits, and compliance requirements (ISO, SOC 2, GDPR, Cyber Essentials).
* Comfortable taking full ownership of security projects and initiatives.
* Experience in SaaS environments is highly desirable.
* Strong communication skills and ability to work independently in a remote-first environment.
