Location: Telford Street, Newport, NP19 0ES Hours: 37 per week Start Date: 26 January 2026 Duration: 12 weeks (possible extensionn) Pay Rate: £13.05 PAYE About the Client Newport City Council’s Waste Management Service plays a vital role in keeping the city clean, safe and welcoming. Their Street Cleansing Operatives ensure public spaces are maintained to a high standard, supporting community pride and environmental sustainability. The Role As a Street Cleansing Operative, you will carry out daily cleansing and refuse collection duties across the Newport area. Working to scheduled routes and service standards, you will help maintain clean streets, public spaces and neighbourhoods. This is a hands‑on, physical role requiring stamina, reliability and a positive approach to serving the public. You will work as part of a wider team under the supervision of the Assistant Manager (Refuse & Cleansing) and Supervisors, with responsibility for ensuring all tasks are completed safely and efficiently. Key Responsibilities Complete daily street cleansing tasks in line with route schedules and service specifications Support refuse collection duties as required Wear council‑issued uniform and protective equipment at all times Follow all health and safety regulations, reporting incidents, accidents or faults Attend training sessions when instructed Undertake cleansing duties as directed by supervisors Work cooperatively with colleagues and maintain good customer service when interacting with the public Maintain high standards of cleanliness across designated areas Work outdoors in all weather conditions Follow rostered shift patterns, including weekends, bank holidays and extra‑statutory days Candidate Requirements Knowledge of the Newport City area (essential) Experience working in refuse or cleansing services (desirable) Ability to work independently and as part of a team Ability to meet targets, manage workload and prioritise tasks Good customer care skills Willingness to learn and develop new skills Enthusiastic, self‑motivated and committed to public service Stamina to undertake walking, bending, lifting and carrying Ability to work rostered shifts including weekends and bank holidays Full UK driving licence (desirable)
