Introduction
Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital is seeking passionate Unaccredited Trainees to join our Paediatric Department in 2026!
Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) facilitates a Work-Based Assessment (WBA) program and was the first LHD to deliver the WBA, now with over 15 years of experience. The HNELHD WBA runs over 6 months, is one of the largest in Australia, and is based in Newcastle with a regional hub in Tamworth.
Job share/fractional appointments will be considered. The team is close-knit and eager to support and build the department. The position is available until February 2028.
You will be supporting 4FTE Paediatric Consultants, 2FTE Accredited Trainees, an additional 2FTE Unaccredited Trainees, and 2FTE Resident Medical Officers.
About the Department
Our Paediatric Unit boasts 16 beds and is a level 4 paediatrics and level 3 neonates unit with dedicated adolescent and palliative care spaces, an 8-bed special care nursery, and a 6-bed paediatric unit within the emergency department. We encourage collaboration and collegiate relationships across multi-disciplinary teams to ensure the best service delivery. The ED sees 42,000 presentations per annum (31% paediatric), 800 paediatric admissions, and 1200 births, providing plenty of scope to broaden your paediatric horizons.

Job Responsibilities
The primary purpose of the position is to provide quality paediatric care to patients in a complex clinical environment. Unaccredited trainees will work under an appropriate level of supervision according to their level of competence to evaluate, diagnose, treat, and provide consultation to paediatric patients in general and subspecialty paediatric areas, neonatal intensive care, and paediatric emergency, while undertaking learning experiences in terms of leadership and management to prepare the medical officer for a future career in Paediatrics, Emergency Medicine, or General Practice.
Qualifications and Experience
* Qualifications commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role, and relevant experience. At least three years' postgraduate experience in public hospital service (or equivalent).
* Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary team, including providing leadership and direction to ensure appropriate management of patients.
* Recent medical experience in Paediatrics, Emergency Medicine, or an appropriate related field or practice.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment, utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment, and expertise.
* Demonstrated time management and problem-solving skills with excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
* Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety, and risk management.
* Evidence of continuing professional development and commitment to self-education, experience, and willingness to teach junior medical officers.
