Main duties of the job
This post is non‑residential. You will carry a bleep and be on‑call with others on a 1:8 rota. As a locum you are responsible for managing your work hours, but you must ensure you are safe to work. The registrars’ timetables are firm‑based and you will rotate as determined by the registrar lead, Miss Barbara Gerber. It is vital for patient safety that you takeover and handover jobs and patient information at the start and finish of each shift or day. The handover is normally supervised and attended by a consultant once a day, but all concerned must ensure duties and jobs are handed over correctly at all times.
Job responsibilities
Clinics
When attending clinics, arrive promptly and preferably early to review notes and enable the smooth running of the clinic. You may be asked to see a mixture of new and review patients. Patient notes are a legal document; any entries must be dated, legible and signed, with your printed name and bleep number. A clinic letter should be complete for each patient you see. Training on the trust’s digital letter writing will be provided by a secretary. It is your responsibility to ensure that any letters you write are signed electronically as soon as possible so they can be posted in a timely manner.
Letters must be clear, concise, contain all relevant information and appropriate CCs.
Theatres
Clerk each patient promptly on arrival. Check that the results of all investigations, radiographs and scans are available and written in the notes. Ensure consent forms are completed and signed. Do not consent patients for operations you are not familiar with. If the anaesthetist requests additional investigations, ensure they are completed in a timely manner.
Prescribe required drugs, including prophylactic antibiotics, steroids, VTE prophylaxis (and document the VTE assessment), analgesics and regular medications.
You will be responsible for teaching junior colleagues and students in theatre.
On‑call duties
When on‑call, expect telephone calls from GPs, GDPs, patients and spoke hospitals, as well as internal referrals. During the day, a junior covers the wards and another covers emergency referrals; after 5 pm only one junior covers both. The night junior also cross‑covers the plastic on‑call rota. Week‑ends are supplemented by locums. The on‑call rota is shared on a 1:9 rota, and a consultant is usually available to supervise all emergency and semi‑elective surgery.
If you are unable to work or are sick, notify Human Resources, the clinical lead, the on‑call consultant and use the Goodshape absence management system. Complete an absence form on return to work.
