Job Title: Principal Product Safety Engineer
Location: Barrow-in-Furness, Brough, Filton, Frimley, Portsmouth, Weymouth, or Manchester. We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements – please speak to your recruiter about the options for this particular role.

What you’ll be doing:
1. Attending and reporting to Daily Stand Up Meetings (DSUM)
2. Design activities including:
* Holding requirement elicitation workshops
* Applying Product Safety Recognised Good Practice (e.g., IEC 61508, RTCA DO 178C, etc.)
1. Coordinating and undertaking analysis (Hazard identification, Analysis, and Assessment)
2. Risk reduction activities (reducing risk ALARP)
3. Defining suitable design options and analysing options
4. Applying a systems engineering approach to safety products, including working within a centralised modelling tool
5. Technically leading and coordinating a small safety team as required
6. Preparing safety assessments to support system design and development
7. Preparing Design Safety Justification inputs
8. Providing Safety SME support to product design and gate reviews
9. Governing and assuring parts of the organisation
10. Supporting the development and maintenance of a healthy product Safety Culture within the team and wider business
Your skills and experiences:
Essential:
* Familiarity with UK Defence Standards and publications such as Defence Standard 00-56, 00-55, DSA-01, DSA-02
* Good working knowledge of safety analysis techniques such as FHA, FTA, ETA, FMEA, STPA
* STEM degree with Product Safety experience within a regulated industry
* Good working knowledge of IEC 61508 and/or IEC 61511 for complex Software and Hardware Safety Instrumented Systems
Desirable:
* Experience of model-based Systems Engineering
* Chartered Engineer status or working toward chartership
* Experience within the Defence Industry
* Familiarity with Cyber-Safety concepts
* Experience in developing complex Systems of Systems (SoS)
* Knowledge of Safety standards outside of Defence, such as Civil Aerospace, Rail, Oil & Gas, or other Process Industries

The Safety & Environmental Team:
As the Principal Engineer – Product Safety, your primary duties will focus on safety during the product design process. You will have experience using different analysis techniques and understanding how to apply these to various standards. You will influence design areas with other engineers to ensure holistic solutions. We offer relocation support packages across all Submarines roles, subject to eligibility.
