Company: GenomeKey is a Bristol-based biotech startup developing a next-generation diagnostic device for bloodstream infections, using machine learning and DNA sequencing.
Role Responsibilities
We are seeking a highly creative biomedical engineer to work at the interface of GenomeKey’s Science and Engineering teams. This is an exciting opportunity to help translate scientific processes into engineering systems, driving the development of instruments GenomeKey is developing. You will be working alongside a talented and dedicated team of engineers and scientists working on exciting products with real-world, life-saving applications.
Your Responsibilities Will Include
* Developing new biochemical processes with a focus on how they can be automated within a self-contained instrument, while incorporating GenomeKey’s pre-existing IP.
* Designing, validating, and verifying processes and systems from both biological and engineering perspectives.
* Collaborating with in-house mechanical and manufacturing engineers to develop an automated fluid-handling platform.
* Deploying and supporting specialised instrumentation at partner sites, including training, troubleshooting, and hands-on operation.
* Acting as a core interface between the Science and Engineering teams, ensuring seamless communication and collaboration.
* Planning, managing, and delivering your own R&D projects from concept through to completion.
* Contributing to the implementation and maintenance of ISO13485-compliant quality systems, supporting audit readiness across Engineering and Science functions.
Person Specification
We are looking for an intensely curious, detail-oriented Biomedical Engineer with a passion for science, engineering, and continuous learning. You should be enthusiastic about merging a strong scientific understanding of biochemical processes with creative translational engineering and applications of material science. You will thrive working at the intersection of disciplines, collaborating closely with biologists, engineers, and computer scientists to develop new technologies.
You will enjoy translating complex ideas between teams with varying technical backgrounds, ensuring clear communication and shared understanding across the business. You will bring a proactive, adaptable approach, embracing the fast-paced, evolving environment of a startup, learning on the job, and rising to new challenges with enthusiasm.
Qualifications & Experience
We are open to varied backgrounds for this role but expect candidates to meet most of the following skills and experiences:
Essential
* Master’s degree (MSc/MEng) in a Scientific or Engineering discipline related to Biomedical Engineering, or equivalent experience.
* 3+ years of hands-on industry experience in a biological laboratory setting.
* Experience in the Biotechnology or Medical Device industry.
* Practical experience in molecular or microbiological laboratory techniques.
* Ability to plan, schedule, and deliver complex projects.
* Proven ability to analyse and communicate experimental results clearly to internal and external stakeholders.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Adaptability and resilience to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic startup environment.
* Strong technical troubleshooting skills and hands-on familiarity with lab equipment and processes.
Desirable
* Knowledge of CAD design and prototyping using 3D printers.
* Experience working under a quality management system (QMS).
* Hands-on experience with specialised laboratory equipment such as microscopes, liquid handling robots, fluidic control systems, PCR instruments, or equivalent.
