This role is an exciting opportunity for an existing Band 6 speech and language therapist (SLT) or a Band 5 SLT looking to progress to the next step in their career. You will work in the Magnolia Unit, an inpatient bedded rehabilitation setting, supporting a range of service users, including those post‑stroke and with other neurological and multi‑pathology presentations.
As part of the inpatient wards, you will be supported by an experienced B7 SLT and work alongside a friendly and knowledgeable multidisciplinary team. The team includes physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dieticians, and a neuropsychologist. You will also be part of a wider team of SLTs, offering opportunities for CPD, clinical supervision, and participation in service development initiatives.
Responsibilities
* Deliver a high standard of speech and language therapy to adult inpatients on the Magnolia unit with a range of neurological conditions.
* Perform comprehensive assessments of patients with diverse presentations and complex physical and psychological conditions, and develop individualized treatment programmes.
* Hold responsibility for your own caseload and work autonomously, while collaborating with MDT members to deliver comprehensive care to patients and their carers.
* Co‑operate with the MDT in regular clinical discussion groups, peer review, case review and case conferences.
* Undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.
* Conduct evidence‑based audit and/or research projects to improve clinical practice and recommend changes to the therapy lead.
* Provide coverage for other SLTs within the service as required.
Key Competencies and Duties
1. Take professional and legal accountability for all aspects of your work and any delegated support staff.
2. Carry out comprehensive assessments of patients with acquired communication and swallowing difficulties, using clinical reasoning and assessment techniques to provide an accurate diagnosis.
3. Identify and refer patients for video fluoroscopy and other objective swallowing assessment techniques.
4. Use evidence‑based practice and treatment options to design and deliver specialised speech and language therapy programmes, and plan successful discharge.
5. Takes responsibility for a delegated caseload, ensuring full MDT involvement as required.
6. Engage patients and carers in care planning, using negotiation skills where appropriate.
7. Assess patient understanding of treatment proposals, obtain valid informed consent, and work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity.
8. Communicate effectively with patients and carers using verbal and non‑verbal tools, especially for those with difficulties in understanding or communicating.
9. Maintain accurate comprehensive treatment records in line with Royal College of Speech & Language Therapy and HCPC standards, and communicate results to relevant disciplines via reports and letters.
10. Represent the speech and language therapy service and/or individual patients at MDT meetings, integrating treatment into the overall programme and participating in discharge planning.
11. Provide specialist clinical advice to others regarding management and care of patients.
12. Supervise and support more junior qualified staff, assistants, and therapy technicians, and alert line management of any significant concerns.
13. Use clinical outcome measures to demonstrate the efficacy of interventions and apply sound knowledge of clinical governance and risk management to your caseload and any delegated staff.
