Trust Doctor in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
Applications are invited to apply for a Trust Doctor (ST1/2) post in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. There are 4 posts from August 2025, with short-term opportunities available immediately.
The post is available for 6 months initially with potential for extension. It is full-time with on-call duties, primarily based at Leeds General Infirmary. This position is ideal for trainees committed to plastic surgery who wish to gain further experience prior to core/higher surgical training.
Main duties of the job
The department provides a wide range of specialist plastic and reconstructive surgery and has an international reputation for innovation and high-quality patient care. Services include hand and upper limb surgery (including congenital hand, adult hand, and brachial plexus surgery), head and neck surgery, craniofacial surgery, sarcoma, breast reconstruction, skin cancer, and lower limb reconstruction. All consultants participate in managing general plastic surgery acute and elective cases.

Previous experience in Plastic Surgery is not essential. The successful candidate would be encouraged to pursue an area of interest within the department. Applicants should hold full GMC registration.

Job responsibilities
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Required
The timetable includes operating sessions, Dressing Clinic, routine ward duties, pre-admission clinics, local anaesthetic lists, and outpatient sessions. Routine work involves care of acute and elective patients, attendance at theatre lists, and outpatient clinics.
The Plastic Surgery Unit has 18 adult beds, separate pediatric beds, and a high dependency unit. A daily dressing clinic operates with dedicated staff. There are 21 general anaesthetic and 7 local anaesthetic lists weekly.
Both Leeds hospitals have busy A&E departments, and general plastic surgery emergencies are referred to the unit. The unit handles hand emergencies on a rota with Orthopaedics, often performing combined trauma procedures.
Outpatient clinics are held at St. James's University Hospital, with combined clinics in head and neck oncology, rheumatology, sarcoma, breast, melanoma, and skin cancer. Services include a congenital hand service, brachial plexus injury service, and craniofacial service. There are close ties with Orthopaedics, Gynaecology, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, and Maxillofacial departments for multidisciplinary care.
The successful applicant may also be involved in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances, as requested by consultants, in consultation with colleagues. These duties are considered exceptional and should not be prolonged or regular.
Levels of responsibility
Responsibility levels depend on prior experience, typically at ST1 or above, with supervision from a designated consultant. The aim is to develop the individual’s e-portfolio or equivalent.
