Job Description:
ALTEN UK is seeking a Systems Safety Engineer to support high-integrity defence systems on a long-term programme involving airborne mission-critical platforms. You’ll contribute to the safety assurance of complex systems in line with airworthiness standards, working within a multidisciplinary team and applying structured safety engineering methodologies throughout the full system lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities:
* Perform detailed safety assessments including FMEA, FMECA, FHA, FTA, and Common Mode Analysis to identify and mitigate hazards at both system and subsystem levels.
* Define and maintain Safety & Environmental (S&E) requirements, ensuring traceability to system functions and design features.
* Support the development of safety cases, including argument structure, evidence collation, and production of associated hazard analysis reports.
* Ensure adherence to project-specific and industry safety processes and standards, contributing to regular compliance audits and reviews.
* Collaborate with systems, hardware, and software teams to evaluate functional safety, interface risks, and emergent behaviour across integrated platforms.
* Contribute to planning and estimation activities, supporting risk assessments and verification planning.
Skills & Experience Required:
* 2+ years in System Safety Engineering within defence or aerospace environments
* Strong experience with hazard analysis techniques including FMEA/FMECA, FHA, FTA, and Common Mode Analysis (CMA)
* Experience developing and maintaining safety requirements, hazard logs, and safety cases
* Familiarity with airworthiness and product safety standards
Desirable Skills:
* Understanding of DEF STAN 00-56, ARP4761, or MIL-STD-882
* Exposure to reliability analysis and environmental safety practices
* Experience with tools such as Reliasoft, DOORS, or Windchill Risk & Reliability
* Knowledge of safety assurance in airborne systems (e.g., sensors, navigation, mission systems)
Qualifications & Security:
* Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline (Master’s preferred) OR
Military/Armed Forces background in a technical or engineering role is equally valued.
* Must be SC clearable - 5 Years in the UK minimum
