Ocean Winds (OW) is an international company dedicated to offshore wind energy, created as a 50:50 joint venture owned by EDP Renewables and Engie. OW operates the UK’s largest offshore wind farm, Moray East (950MW), and is finalizing Moray West (882MW). Its UK portfolio also includes Caledonia (2GW) and Arven (a 2.3GW floating offshore wind project) developed with Mainstream Renewable Power. Caledonia has submitted planning consent applications and now seeks a Lead Grid and Transmission Engineer to manage electrical design from concept through to connection, including engagement with NESO and TO, ensuring Grid Code compliance. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the UK’s net-zero targets by delivering the Caledonia project.
Reporting to the Head of Engineering, the Lead Grid and Transmission Engineer will lead the electrical system design for Caledonia, ensuring compliance with industry codes like the Grid Code and SQSS. Responsibilities include developing electrical specifications for cables, substations, and SCADA systems, managing Bilateral Connection and Construction Agreements, and liaising with NESO and TO.
Main Accountabilities
* Overall accountability for connecting the project to the NETS, ensuring compliance with all agreements and standards.
* Justify design and delivery of transmission assets for efficiency and cost-effectiveness, supporting asset sale to offshore transmission owners under the UK’s Generator Build model.
* Identify internal and external technical support needs.
* Provide technical support across departments, including wind turbines and health and safety.
* Manage an electrical engineer and support their development.
Academic Background
* Degree in electrical or mechanical engineering or equivalent; other qualifications considered if demonstrating required knowledge.
* Fluent in English.
Experience
* Minimum of 10 years’ experience in the power/energy sector, with experience working on electrical systems up to 400kV.
* Experience managing electrical system design for offshore wind farms or transmission assets.
Knowledge
* Knowledge of electrical system design, study, and analysis processes.
* Understanding of GB regulatory regime, including the Grid Code and SQSS.
Skills
* Dynamic, team-oriented, eager to learn.
* Ability to interact with high-level stakeholders and support junior team members.
