WPH Counselling and Education Service is a charity providing a BACP-Accredited counselling service to the people of Walsall. Although the charity is small we have big ambitions to improve the mental health of people living across the borough.

WPH provides free, caring, confidential counselling to individuals from an attractive base in Walsall and outposts across the borough, including schools & external venues.

Job description

WPH Counselling are looking to recruit Children and Young People's (C&YP) Counsellors to join their highly skilled team, initially on a fixed term basis until end of March 2026. The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic counselling service and will have clinical supervision provided. The candidate will need to have experience of working therapeutically with children and young people. They will hold a Level 5 or equivalent in counselling/psychotherapy and will hold professional membership and registration with the BACP, or with another SCoPEd counselling professional body, and, at WPH, follow the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Main duties and responsibilities:

2. Providing therapeutic counselling to children and young people (up to 18 years old)

3. Guiding schools and teaching staff to best support their pupils.
4. Assessing clients to measure therapeutic readiness and any relevant risk issues.
5. Keeping up to date and accurate records
6. Working as part of a team.

7. Take on additional responsibilities as agreed with Line Manager.

8. Undertake training and attend meetings as required.

9. To regularly attend supervision and to maintain confidentiality in accordance with WPH policy.

10. To undertake and provide evidence of professional development.

11. To contract and regularly review with clients the frequency and evolving goals for the counselling. Working towards planned and negotiated endings.

12. To work in accordance with any established professional guidelines and codes of practice.

13. To comply with all statutory safety regulations and WPH policies and procedures.

14. To take appropriate steps to ensure own safety by adhering to lone-worker policy.

15. To actively 'risk assess' any concerns about health and safety, confidentiality, safeguarding, mental capacity and share those concerns with the line management and with external professionals with statutory authority where appropriate.

16. To work within the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy

17. The ability to travel to schools within the Borough of Walsall & external venues

Responsibilities will include:

* Providing time limited counselling to young people who have completed an assessment after being referred to the service.
* Ensuring that clients understand the service and are competent to consent to engage with counselling.
* Maintaining appropriate records of counselling in line with legal, ethical and organisational constraints.
* Communicating and liaising with other agencies within the limitations of the role and confidentiality; this will be done with support from the supervisor/clinical lead.
* Maintaining professional membership and practice in accordance with the ethical framework of the BACP including the participation in regular supervision and CPD.
* Maintaining awareness of the rights of the child and allow them autonomy within the counselling process.
* Ensuring that monitoring and feedback is maintained as part of the ongoing sustainability of the service.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Hold a level 5 or higher recognised counselling qualification

Children & Young person's qualification and/or practical experience relevant to this age group.

Registered member of the BACP (ideally working towards accreditation) or with another SCoPEd counselling professional body

Enhanced DBS disclosure (update service preferable however can be applied for on appointment).

Knowledge of working with distressed individuals

Desirable: Experience of working successfully with children and young people in a therapeutic or support setting.

Skills, knowledge, and personal attributes

Experience of assessing children & young people

Live within commutable travelling distance of Walsall

Evidence of commitment to professional training

Be able to work evenings (Tuesday, Wednesday and/or Thursday until 8:30pm) if required

Hours: We currently have a set number of hours that we are recruiting for due to additional short-term funding from one of our current funders. We anticipate depending on number of hours desired, we would have 2/3 positions available. Please indicate within your application how many hours you are seeking.

Pay: £14.20 per hour
