About CMSD
The Centre for Multilateral Strategy and Diplomacy (CMSD) is an international research and policy institution focused on regional stability, strategic competition, and multilateral security dynamics across Europe, Eurasia, and adjacent regions.
CMSD works with researchers, practitioners, and senior advisors across multiple countries to produce policy-relevant analysis, strategic foresight, and institutional dialogue on defense, geopolitical risk, multilateral governance, and emerging security theatres.
As part of its institutional expansion, CMSD is establishing a dedicated Arctic and High North Security vertical, focused on geopolitical competition, maritime security, regional defense dynamics, and institutional developments across the Nordic and Arctic regions.
Role Overview
CMSD is seeking to appoint an Advisor — Arctic & High North Security to support the institution's growing focus on Arctic geopolitics, Nordic security architecture, maritime strategy, and regional defense developments.
The Advisor will contribute strategic guidance, intellectual leadership, and institutional direction to CMSD's Arctic research initiatives, while supporting the organisation's positioning within Nordic, European, and transatlantic policy ecosystems.
This role is intended for experienced professionals with deep familiarity with Arctic security environments, Nordic strategic affairs, and European or transatlantic defense and policy structures.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide strategic guidance on Arctic and High North geopolitical, security, and defense developments
• Support the development and positioning of CMSD's Arctic and Nordic security research agenda
• Advise on maritime security, strategic competition, regional deterrence, and institutional dynamics in the Arctic region
• Review and provide senior-level input on policy reports, strategic assessments, and analytical publications
• Strengthen CMSD's intellectual and institutional credibility within Nordic and European policy ecosystems
• Provide mentorship and guidance to researchers working on Arctic and High North security topics
• Advise CMSD leadership on institutional engagement opportunities within Nordic, European, and transatlantic policy communities
• Participate in periodic Strategic Council consultations and institutional advisory discussions
Ideal Candidate Profile
• 10–20+ years of professional experience in security, defense, intelligence, strategic policy, or geopolitical risk environments
• Professional experience within or alongside institutions such as:
– Government defense or foreign policy institutions
– Arctic or Nordic-focused think tanks and research institutes
– European Union institutions or transatlantic security frameworks
– Defense industry, maritime security firms, or strategic advisory organisations
– Intelligence, risk analysis, or geopolitical consulting environments
• Strong understanding of Arctic geopolitics, Nordic regional security, maritime strategy, and High North institutional dynamics
• Direct familiarity with Nordic policy ecosystems, including countries such as Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, or Iceland
• Ability to operate at a senior advisory level and contribute strategic direction
• Interest in supporting emerging institutional platforms and mentoring early-career analysts
