Overview As a Consultant Older Adult Liaison Psychiatrist working alongside a Consultant General Adult Liaison Psychiatrist, the post holder will provide clinical leadership to a well‑established multidisciplinary Liaison Psychiatry Team. The team operates as a 24/7 service, receiving referrals for any patients 18 and over presenting with mental health difficulties who have been admitted to Watford General Hospital or are attending the Emergency Department. The team currently receives an average of 275 individual referrals per month; 70% from the Emergency Department and 30% from inpatient wards.
Responsibilities
Provide clinical leadership and supervision to other team members and to the multidisciplinary team, and cross‑cover for the General Adult Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist.
Offer expert clinical input, including assessment, for patients with complex presentations. Assess and review patients in the A&E department and wards, providing psychiatric expertise for complex cases and collaborating with clinical staff in the Acute Trust to improve patient care and outcomes. Contribute to an ad‑hoc outpatient follow‑up clinic where patients assessed by the Mental Health Liaison team and discharged home are brought back for joint geriatrics review under the delirium pathway (Ambulatory care).
Regularly review service users waiting for mental‑health admission to ensure changing needs are assessed and appropriate changes to the management plan are implemented to offer the least restrictive treatment options.
Provide clinical leadership at daily referrals meetings and board rounds. Attend multidisciplinary professionals’ meetings and other multi‑agency meetings with clinical partners providing acute physical healthcare to provide an integrated approach. Opportunity to develop specialised clinics in conjunction with other teams and provide input to focused initiatives, e.g. High‑Intensity User Support Teams.
