An exciting developmental opportunity has arisen for a motivated and dynamic senior nurse with extensive experience to join the team of Patient Flow Matrons based in Clinical Operations at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a senior nurse for patient flow and site management.
The post holder will be a key member of the Clinical Operations team, leading and coordinating capacity to support effective clinical flow for both elective and emergency pathways, while maintaining patient safety and providing visible senior clinical leadership out of hours as Duty Matron.
The successful applicant will be a professional clinical role model who inspires confidence, demonstrates excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, prioritization, decision-making, and problem-solving skills, with the confidence and ability to escalate issues beyond their responsibilities.
You will demonstrate attention to detail, with the ability to analyze complex information from multiple sources, using IT to pre-empt planned and unplanned admissions, and ensuring proactive systems and processes for managing safe patient flow across all Trust sites.
Main duties of the job
* Ensure proactive systems and processes for managing patient flow across all Trust sites.
* Work collaboratively to lead and manage the Patient Flow Sister Team and Discharge Lounge teams, providing professional advice and leadership to the Patient Transport service. This role focuses on delivering high-quality, safe, and effective care, aligning with the Trust PROUD values and behaviors.
* Lead safe, resilient, and consistent operational site management, facilitating safe and effective discharge in accordance with Trust policies.
* Manage bed capacity and demand through the ED, supporting timely assessment, treatment, and transfer.
* Participate as part of a rotational team of Patient Flow matrons, managing patient flow and fulfilling the Duty Matron role out of hours across NGH and Central campuses.
* Provide visible leadership and liaise with assessment areas to facilitate patient flow, improving throughput to specialty wards and utilization of the Discharge Lounge.

The Patient Flow team is a corporate nursing team based in Clinical Operations. Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is one of the UK's largest NHS trusts, providing a wide range of services including trauma, orthopaedics, renal, cardiac, pulmonary, and spinal injuries.
This is a fixed-term contract for up to 9 months, with potential for early termination or extension based on internal/external secondment needs. The contract will be reviewed according to legal obligations regarding fixed-term employment.

Qualifications
* First level Registered General Nurse (NMC registration).
* Masters in a health-related subject or currently pursuing one.
* Recognized leadership/management qualification.
* Completed the national PEAP program for practice supervisors or an equivalent teaching and assessing qualification (ENB998).
* Ongoing professional development evidence.
Experience
* Extensive post-registration experience as a senior nurse, including ward/service management.
* Experience managing high-quality, patient-centered acute services.
* Experience in senior nursing leadership, managing staff and HR issues (complaints, investigations).
* Experience with governance systems.
* Proven change management and strategic implementation experience.
Skills and Knowledge
* Understanding of patient flow in a busy acute Trust.
* Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
* Effective contribution to organizational strategy.
* IT skills, including DATIX and Microsoft Office.
Personal Qualities
* Motivated and passionate about patient flow and patient-centered care.
* Confident decision-maker, capable of autonomous and team work.
