This is an exciting 11-week paid placement where you’ll be at the heart of our language teams, making a real impact. You’ll apply your Russian language skills and cultural knowledge to audio and written materials, uncovering valuable insights with specialist tools. Your work will provide vital context for colleagues, customers, and intelligence partners.
As part of a friendly community of language specialists, you’ll translate and transcribe Russian-language materials, some of which may be technical or specialised. Your findings will influence operations, and you’ll have opportunities to draft intelligence reports and conduct research. This role is a great opportunity to test and develop your language skills and work alongside passionate professionals.
To be eligible, you must have (or be expecting) at least a 2:2 degree in Russian. You should be in your final year or have graduated in summer 2022 or later. You must be a British Citizen (or hold dual nationality with one part British) and have lived in the UK for at least seven of the last ten years.
No technical background is required—just enthusiasm for learning and developing new skills that complement your language abilities.
During the programme, you will earn a salary of £6,505 - £7,255 depending on location. Benefits include 5.5 days of annual leave, subsidised gym, restaurant, and, in Cheltenham, on-site coffee bars.
You will receive dedicated training in language and analysis, combining classroom and hands-on learning, supported by trained professionals, coaching, and mentoring to help you thrive.
After completing the programme, you may apply for a permanent role, subject to tests and interviews. At GCHQ, this can lead to becoming a language specialist and joining the Language Career Development Scheme, offering further professional development and qualifications. At MI5, you’ll continue Russian lessons and join a growing community of language specialists.
Please note: GCHQ roles are based in Cheltenham, Manchester, and Scarborough, with limited roles in London for MI5.
