Job Overview
The Financial Times is seeking a Deputy Chief Production Journalist for its Opinion and Analysis department. The successful candidate will work across the FT’s Opinion, Big Read, Work and Careers, Leaders and Letters content – both online and in print – working closely with Alice Fishburn, opinion editor, and Alistair Hayes, chief production journalist. This role is ideal for an ambitious journalist looking to take a senior position that involves team management, expanding editorial experience while overseeing publishing schedules and daily print runs, and adding a high‑impact signature to some of the FT’s most‑read content.
Key Responsibilities
* Write catchy headlines, stand‑firsts and captions plus edit page layouts.
* Liaise with columnists and leader writers.
* Produce and edit the FT’s letters section as required.
* Run staff rotas when the CPJ is absent.
* Sub‑edit, edit, revise, produce web content and lay out pages across the Features sections.
* Join the rota of stand‑in Letters editors, working one day in five Sundays; training will be provided.
Key Skills & Qualifications
* Flair for writing punchy print headlines and a keen eye for headline structure.
* Speed and confidence under deadline pressure.
* Innovative proposals that improve reader engagement.
* Familiarity with Spark, Methode and Slack for web and print content.
* Experience guiding and teaching other team members.
* Organisational skills to ensure the team meets all deadlines.
* Flexibility to step in as workloads or staff absences require.
* Confidence to work with, and manage, freelancers.
