Urban Designer Chelmsford £45,000 Aztrum are excited to be working with a leading developer of large-scale residential communities, is seeking a talented Urban Designer to join its in-house design team. This is a key role for a creative and technically skilled professional with a passion for designing high-quality, people-focused housing layout schemes that contribute to the success of major residential developments. The Urban Designer will play a central role in shaping new neighbourhoods and residential masterplans, focusing on the design of site layouts that are attractive, functional, and commercially viable. Key Responsibilities for this Urban Design role: Design and develop housing layout schemes for a wide range of residential sites, from early-stage feasibility through to detailed planning. Create and refine masterplans, street layouts, plot arrangements, and supporting design documents. Respond to planning and design policy requirements while balancing density, viability, and placemaking principles. Work collaboratively with internal departments and external consultants (including planning consultants, engineers, and architects) to deliver coordinated design outcomes. Contribute to Design and Access Statements, Design Codes, and other planning submission materials. Keep up-to-date with relevant urban design standards, local authority requirements, and best practice guidance (e.g., Building for a Healthy Life, National Design Guide). Assist in public consultation and stakeholder engagement processes where needed.Essentials for this Urban Designer role: A degree or postgraduate qualification in Urban Design, Architecture, or a related discipline. Experience working on residential layout design, ideally for volume housebuilders or large-scale developments. Proficiency in AutoCAD and Adobe Creative Suite is essential; experience with SketchUp, GIS, or Revit is advantageous. Sound knowledge of UK planning policy and design frameworks. Strong graphic and visualisation skills to communicate design ideas clearly and effectively.
