Job Summary
South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust (STSFT) is recruiting a Trainee Cognitive Behaviour Therapist to deliver evidence‑based psychological treatment to children and young people and their families in our established Children and Young People’s Mental Health Service (CYPMHS) across South Tyneside, Sunderland and Gateshead.
Successful applicants will gain experience providing high intensity CBT interventions, attend and complete the CBT‑PG Diploma in Evidence Based Psychological Therapy at Northumbria University within 12 months, and work in a training capacity.
Responsibilities
* Deliver evidence‑based high‑intensity CBT interventions to children and young people in a training capacity.
* Attend and complete the CBT‑PG Diploma in Evidence Based Psychological Therapy within 12 months.
* Use evidence‑based interventions and deliver training where appropriate.
* Work with children and young people and families from diverse cultural backgrounds, including underserved populations, using interpreters where necessary.
* Meet service targets and attend regular supervision.
* Maintain safeguarding and welfare standards for children and young people.
Qualifications and Experience
* Professional qualification in teaching, nursing, social work, AHP, counselling or within psychological therapy.
* Experience working in a children and young people’s mental health service, offering assessments and treatments.
* Experience working within the community or education setting.
* Knowledge and experience of safeguarding and the promotion of welfare for children and young people.
* Experience in carrying out risk assessments within the scope of practice.
Essential Skills and Knowledge
* Proven time and caseload management skills.
* Strong written and oral communication, able to write clear reports and letters.
* Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and other associated IT packages.
* Organisational skills and ability to work flexibly in a variety of environments.
* Ability to work as part of a multi‑disciplinary team and to engage vulnerable and underserved populations.
Desirable Skills
* Experience with service targets and demonstrating clinical outcomes.
* Knowledge of child development and its links with childhood mental health.
Training and Development
Successful trainees will undertake a CBT‑PG Diploma in Evidence Based Psychological Therapy at Northumbria University, to be completed within 12 months. Training commences January 2026; therefore availability from that date is required.
