University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us. This vacancy is for a Consultant in Histopathology with an interest in pulmonary pathology and one or more of gynecological, GI/HPB and skin pathology. The role can be permanent or a fixed-term contract of 6 to 12 months. The service covers the local Southampton population and regional referrals from around Wessex.
You will contribute to the established pulmonary pathology subspecialist team, plus at least one other, including reporting of histology and cytology specimens, dissection and MDTs. Autopsy work can be discussed. There are teaching responsibilities and links with the University of Southampton for undergraduate teaching, with the opportunity to be involved in postgraduate teaching as part of the regional training centre.

Responsibilities
The details of the job plan will be discussed with clinical leads. An expected 10 PAs will typically be split 8 DCC to 2 SPA with no on-call commitment. Direct clinical care activities include microscopic reporting, macroscopic dissection (supervision of scientist-led dissection), MDT meetings, frozen section cover, reporting with trainees, and rapid on-site assessment in cytology. Slides are allocated via a web-based workload management system (SAINTS).
You will be joining an established team of two consultant pulmonary pathologists and will contribute to at least one other subspecialty (e.g., gynecological pathology, breast pathology, skin pathology, GI/HPB). You will work within a wider cellular pathology team with multiple histopathologists and neuropathology colleagues. The department uses digital reporting and has opportunities for further development in molecular pathology and AI.
There will be opportunities to contribute to the postmortem service in a modern mortuary. Teaching and training responsibilities include supervision of residents and undergraduates in collaboration with the University of Southampton. There is support for CPD and study leave, with annual appraisal processes in place.
Qualifications
Essential
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
* GMC registration with a licence to practise
* FRCPath (or equivalent) qualification
* Experience working within the NHS
Desirable
* Experience in pulmonary pathology
* Experience within molecular pathology networks
Aptitudes and Skills
* Ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
* Good communication skills (verbal and written)
* Strong organisational skills and ability to prioritise
