CONSULTANT IN OBSTETRICS – FETAL MEDICINE

We invite applications for a full‑time substantive Specialist Consultant in Fetal and Maternal Medicine for the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. This role is part of a multidisciplinary pregnancy service providing specialist care for complex fetal and maternal conditions, as well as high‑risk maternity care.

Job Overview

The University Hospitals of Leicester are a surgical, cardiac and genetic referral centre, recognised as the regional host for an abnormally invasive placenta service (AIP). The Fetal and Maternal Medicine team receives referrals from seven regional hospitals, manages complex fetal medicine and surgical cases, and is part of the East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre. The service currently employs six consultants and will expand further with in‑utero surgical services.


Main Duties of the Job

* Provide tertiary level fetal medicine service at UHL.
* Support the East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre fetal cardiac service.
* Support the Fetal Medicine service at Kettering.
* Contribute to Maternal Medicine clinics at LRI and LGH.
* Participate in the Maternity Assessment Units at LRI & LGH and the obstetric on‑call rota as directed by the Head of Service.
* Supervise and train junior medical staff.
* Perform elective obstetric lists and ward rounds, providing prospective cover when required.
* Attend Delivery Suite sessions, including hot week duties, working with mid‑wifery and other colleagues.
* Take part in multidisciplinary case discussions and care planning.
* Engage in teaching, complaint and incident management, and administration.
* Appraise and assess juniors.
* Contribute to ongoing research activities and participate in departmental/Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

The job plan is reviewed annually. The successful candidate will work with the CMG management team to deliver services efficiently, incorporating flexible, future‑proof processes.

The plan spans a nine‑week cycle, including hot week delivery suite cover and a core schedule. The hot week accounts for 5.2 weeks per annum and is equivalent to 1.64 PA with prospective cover.


Person Specification – Qualifications / Training

* MBBS or equivalent.
* Full GMC registration.
* MRCOG or appropriate specialist registration.
* Relevant CCT or equivalent; equivalence confirmed by GMC by AAC date.
* Sub‑specialty training in Maternal and Fetal Medicine or eligibility for membership of relevant specialist societies or associations.


Job‑Related Special Skills

* Expert clinical opinion on high‑risk obstetrics and fetal medicine problems.
* Experience managing and counselling patients with fetal anomalies at tertiary level.
* Ability to carry out invasive procedures.
* Participation in the on‑call rota.
* Active involvement in audits and research.


Experience / Clinical Skills

* Fully trained in Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
* Clinical knowledge and expertise, with sound clinical judgment and evidence‑based practice.
* Willingness to develop skills and experience in areas of interest.
* Willingness to develop skills and experience in areas of interest.
* Delivery of high‑quality acute clinical care.


Communication

* Demonstrable written and spoken English skills, enabling effective communication with patients and colleagues.
* Empathy, sensitivity, and the capacity to take others’ perspectives.

Successful candidates will be required to undertake a DBS check. The Trust will initially pay for the check and thereafter, over a three‑month period commencing on the first month’s payment, the cost will be deducted from your salary.

Current price: £38 for an enhanced check; £18 for a standard check.
