The Opportunity North Yorkshire is the largest county in England, blending historic market towns with innovative educational hubs and vast natural landscapes. We are seeking a dedicated Mathematics Teacher to join our faculty. Whether based in the shadow of the Minster in York, the coastal community of Scarborough, or the gateway to the Dales in Skipton, this role offers the chance to deliver a high-quality curriculum that empowers students with the logical and analytical tools needed for the modern world.
-----------------------------------
The Department
* You will join a high-achieving Mathematics department that prioritizes "mastery" of the subject, ensuring students build deep conceptual understanding before moving to complex applications.
* The department is well-resourced with interactive software (such as HegartyMaths, Sparx, or Desmos), physical manipulatives for geometric visualization, and advanced graphing calculators for Post-16 study.
* We foster a culture of mathematical resilience, encouraging students to see "productive struggle" as a vital part of the learning process.
* We maintain strong links with the Yorkshire and Humber Maths Hub, providing staff with access to the latest national research and pedagogical strategies in mathematics education.
-----------------------------------
Core Responsibilities
1. Delivering high-impact lessons across the mathematics curriculum, including Number, Algebra, Ratio and Proportion, Geometry, and Statistics.
2. Teaching students to apply mathematical logic to solve multi-step problems, preparing them for the increased reasoning demands of the current GCSE and A-Level specifications.
3. Preparing Year 11 and Year 13 students for examinations, with a particular focus on bridging the gap between pure mathematics and its application in mechanics and statistics.
4. Implementing effective "Cold Calling" and "Check for Understanding" techniques to ensure all students are following the logical progression of a solution.
5. Leading extracurricular initiatives such as the UKMT Junior and Intermediate Maths Challenges, "Code Breaking" clubs, or lunchtime support clinics.
-----------------------------------
The Successful Candidate We are looking for a specialist who can make even the most abstract concepts feel accessible. Requirements include:
* Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
* A proven ability to model mathematical thinking clearly, showing students how to structure their work and communicate their reasoning effectively.
* Strong subject knowledge across the current GCSE and A-Level specifications, with the ability to challenge high-attainers while scaffolding for those who find the subject difficult.
* A commitment to staying current with mathematical pedagogy, particularly in the use of dual coding and cognitive load theory within the classroom.
-----------------------------------
Why Join Us?
* A school that recognizes Mathematics as a "critical core" subject, essential for students' success in STEM, finance, and digital industries.
* Access to a structured CPD program focused on both subject-specialist upskilling and the development of leadership skills within a department.
* A supportive, professional staff culture within a county that offers an exceptional quality of life, from the North York Moors to some of the UK’s most beautiful historic cities.
* The opportunity to work in a region with a diverse range of school settings, providing varied and rewarding career paths.
