The role: We are looking for a Revenue Controller to join our Finance department in London or Bristol. T h e role is primarily responsible fo r the day to day management of the wor k - i n-progress for designated practice groups covering the firm’ s UK off i ces. Thi s is a proactiv e role, supportin g and working alongside other Revenue Controllers i n seekin g to achieve and m aintain an optimu m loc k - up c y cle and act as a focal point fo r m atter partners and m atter fee earner s within those designated practice groups. This role will also be responsible for the supervision and development of the billing assistants, production and delivery of an efficient and effective bill processing service and ensuring a high-quality service in day to day work. Leading change in approaches to new systems and processes. The role requires a high level of accuracy, strict compliance with VAT legislation and adherence to the firm’s policies and procedures, in relation to billing, credit notes, time write-offs and transfers, and the maintenance of the firm’s financial data. I n addition, thi s role i nvolves advising the business on acknowledged bes t practice to obtain the m o s t beneficial commercial deals fro m ou r clients and is also responsibl e fo r producing and interpreting ke y m anage m ent reports. The role will approximately spend 70% focussed on Revenue Control and 30% on bill processing including drafting and engrossment. What will you do: Building effective relationships and networks inside and outside o f the firm t o influence and improve the firm’s lock -u p cycle: Establishin g stron g workin g relationship s wit h al l matte r partner s throug h regula r monthly revie w meeting s to ensure that focu s is m aintained on ti m el y billing to meet agreed targets and billing timetables. Ensuring tha t regula r bil l ing patterns, and where possible m onthly billing c y cles, are established taking care that any special billing arrangements are observed. Ensuring that MFEs and MPs return an y i ssued wor k - i n - progress reports and a n y drafted bills on a timely basis to meet pledged targets and timetable requirements. Encouraging MFE’s and MP s to adhere to the firm’ s ti m e recording policy which will result in m o re accurate financial information and potentially a reduced lock up period. Accepting responsibility and taking ownership o f operational issues, finding practical solution s and escalating problems where appropriate. Interacting with a wide range o f contacts at different levels, requiring an awarenes s of ow n i m pact on others and an adjustment of behaviour accordingly. Ap plyin g commercial logi c to advise the business o n bes t practice in order t o obtain the maximum financial benefit for the firm: Providing commercial and legislative advice as appropriate. Obtaining relevant feedbac k to advise on i m prove m ents to the processe s o f the tea m and actively promoting the finance function. Providing a quality service and ensuring that the team processes and objectives align with business needs Consistently sharing knowledge and skills with colleagues. Ensuring that all processes are carried out accurately and in a timely manner, in line with agreed service levels. Adhering to agreed best practices, policies and processes whilst adapting to local requirements as necessary. Preparation of key managemen t reports, applyin g advanced excel functionality as necessary, to provide the practice with timely and r elevant information: Issuing aged W IP, debt and draft bill report s t o designated practice groups on a weekly basis and m eeting with the m regularly t o plan the achievement of targets. In the run in to month ends, send daily billing updates to those practice groups to keep them informed of where they are against monthly and year to date budgets. Reporting to the Head of UK Finance and London F inance M anagers on progress against monthly billing targets. Using technical expertis e t o provide detailed inpu t int o the accurate valuatio n o f WIP and ensuring complianc e wit h the relevant Custom s & Excise legislation, the provision s o f the Solicitor s A ccounts Rules and Money Lau n dering regulations: Provide and co-ordinate detailed input to the accurate valuation of W I P on a periodic basis. Pro-active involvement and co-ordination in the firms audit and taking ownership of the relevant work streams assigned. Undertaking monthly review s o f aged W IP balances t o identify contingent WIP, w r it e -off provision balances and previously pledged billing but not actioned. In line with the firm’s policies and procedures, co-ordinate write off thresholds through International Practice group heads and the IEC committee where appropriate. Liaising with the cashier tea m regarding the allocation o f receipts, and with the billing team regarding billing, credit notes and r e - issued invoices, to confir m the accuracy o f the information used in financial analysis and reporti n g. Ensuring that draft bills and engrossed invoices are issued in line with the firm’s policies and procedures, meeting all legislative regulations. Ensuring the effective application of special rates and arrangements on all matters and taking measures to diagnose and rectify errors. Authorisation o f transaction s on behalf o f the finance department, providing corporate governance and financial control. What we are looking for: Excellent academics. Commercially driven.
