Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, committed and compassionate Band 6 Paediatric Nurse (Senior Staff Nurse) to work in Rays of Sunshine Ward. Rays of Sunshine Ward is an 18 bedded paediatric ward specialising in liver-related illnesses and care for children and young people with conditions such as biliary atresia, hepatitis, liver tumours, acute liver failure, liver and intestinal transplantation and related gastrointestinal conditions. King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a busy teaching hospital with strong multidisciplinary collaboration with liver clinical nurse specialists and transplant coordinators. The ward provides high-quality care to dependent children and their families. In-house training is provided; no prior liver experience is required for the Band 6 role, but leadership is expected.

* Provide expert, holistic care of a high standard to patients and their relatives within Rays of Sunshine Ward.
* Take direct managerial responsibility for the clinical area in the absence of, or as delegated by, the Ward Leader.
* Help lead and develop an identified group of nurses within the ward.
* Act as a clinical resource within the ward and across the Care Group as necessary.
* Model high standards of care, ensuring patient-focused, courteous service and patient confidentiality at all times.
Education, Training and Research
* Mentor junior staff, oversee orientation, supervision and ongoing development in conjunction with the Line Manager and Practice Development staff.
* Act as practice supervisor, completing competency documents for junior staff within agreed timeframes.
* Mentor students undertaking further education and support positive learning experiences.
* Promote research uptake and evidence-based practice; participate in relevant clinical research as appropriate.
Management and Leadership
* Manage clinical workload effectively and support cost-efficient service delivery.
* Organise ward activities, coordinate care, and liaise with Medical Personnel and Bed Manager for optimal bed usage.
* Lead an identified group of staff, monitor development of clinical skills and contribute to recruitment and performance management as required.
* Support risk management and drive quality improvement, resolving issues and promoting excellent customer care.
Professional Development and People Management
* Maintain clinical competence; keep up to date with NMC, Trust and Care Group policies.
* Participate in performance appraisals and ensure team development plans are in place.
* Ensure statutory and mandatory training is up to date; manage sickness, vacancies, and wellbeing within the team.
* Plan and monitor skills mix and resource allocation to maximise efficiency.
Person Specification
* Essential: 1st level Registered Paediatric Nurse; experience managing challenging situations; ability to contribute to the development of students, nurses and oneself.
* Desirable: experience working within paediatric liver.

This post is subject to Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks. UK Registration with current professional status is required. This is a permanent, full-time Band 6 position located at King’s College Hospital, Denmark Hill, London SE5 9RS. Salary range: £46,419 to £55,046 per year depending on experience and location.
