Architect – St Albans Cathedral – Freelance/ Consultancy position – Competitive rates offered, retainer to be agreed upon appointment – Five-year term, with the potential to extend.
St Albans Cathedral is seeking to appoint a new Architect, to support and guide the Chapter in its care for, and conservation of, the fabric of the Cathedral.
About the Cathedral
St Albans Cathedral is a Grade 1 Scheduled national monument and home to two medieval shrines, several world-class medieval wall paintings and an amazing mix of architectural styles that bear witness to many centuries of its life, first as a monastic Abbey and now as a Cathedral. It is the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain and the core of the existing building dates back over 900 years. Conserving and protecting the building is an ongoing challenge, responsibility and privilege.
Role
To act as the professional technical advisor to Chapter on all matters for which it has statutory and non-statutory architectural responsibility as required under The Cathedrals Measure 2021.
Regular Responsibilities include:
* Providing professional guidance to the Cathedral’s executive team for all structural repair work and structural alteration to the Cathedral
* Providing professional guidance on works to the wider Cathedral precinct as required
* Carrying out a regular inspection of the whole of the fabric of the Cathedral building
* Working with other key stakeholders and subject matter experts such as the Cathedral’s Fabric Advisory Committee (FAC), the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England (CFCE), Historic England, local authority planning and conservation officers and with the Cathedral’s Archaeological Consultant
Required skills and experience
* Strong technical skillset with experience in conservation and repair
* Professional conservation accreditation
* Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders of different disciplines including other consultants and subject matter experts
* Imagination and creativity to find workable and affordable solutions
* ARB or RICS registered
* An understanding of the Cathedral’s mission, vision and priorities
Experience of church repairs and re-orderings is desirable but not essential. The Cathedral is open to receiving applications from non-Cathedral architects as well as suitably qualified RICS surveyors.

Interviews will be held on Wednesday 19 November 2025. Please keep this day free as the panel will not reconvene.
Following interview, the successful candidate will be appointed to start 1 January 2026. Appropriate handover time in January with the current Architect will be agreed upon appointment.
