Job summary
The postholder is accountable for the strategic and day-to-day operational delivery, development, and continuous improvement of high-quality pharmacy services to inpatient wards. The post-holder will provide leadership and management to a team of pharmacy technicians and support staff, ensuring the safe, effective, and efficient use of medicines across clinical areas. Working collaboratively with pharmacists, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals, the post-holder will play a pivotal role in supporting patient care, optimising medicines management processes, and driving service innovation. They will also contribute to workforce development, service evaluation, and the implementation of best practices in line with national standards and local priorities.
Main duties of the job
o To maintain registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) as a registered
pharmacy technician and to comply with the GPhC Code of Ethics.
o To ensure timely and accurate medicines management at ward level.
o To monitor and support the use of automated and digital systems supporting medicines
supply and administration.
o To monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and take action to resolve variances.
o To carry out final accuracy checks of dispensed medication as an Accredited Checking
Technician.
o Provide specialist technical advice to clinical teams and patients on complex medicines
management issues, including safe handling, administration and compliance with
medicines legislation.
o Act as the technical lead for ward-based pharmacy services, advising on specialist
processes such as controlled drug management, aseptic preparation and compliance with
local policies and procedures.
o Required to operate and troubleshoot automated dispensing systems and digital
medicines management tools with precision.
o To contribute to strategic planning for pharmacy services, identifying opportunities for
improvement and innovation.
o To participate in multidisciplinary projects to enhance medicines optimisation and reduce
waste.
o To implement changes in practice aligned with national initiatives (e.g. NHS Long Term
Plan, GIRFT).
