Consultant Psychiatrist - Older People Mental Health (Inverclyde)

Join to apply for the Consultant Psychiatrist - Older People Mental Health role at NHS Scotland. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest health‑care systems in the UK, employing around 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non‑clinical professions. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million in our region and 2.2 million when national services are included.


Shift Pattern

Monday‑Friday: 9am‑5pm, plus an on‑call rota (1 in 25 for non‑resident). The post is a full‑time 10 PA position, with options for less‑than‑full‑time or flexible arrangements.


Role Overview

We are seeking enthusiastic candidates for this Inverclyde Consultant post in Old Age Psychiatry to deliver comprehensive psychiatric care for patients aged over 65 registered at GP practices in Greenock, Port Glasgow and Kilmacolm, covering the Eastern Inverclyde HSCP (population ~8,500). The role includes both outpatient and inpatient responsibilities, with clinical leadership expected across multidisciplinary teams in the community and hospital settings.

Inpatient care is provided at Ward 4, Larkfield Unit, Inverclyde Royal Hospital. The service benefits from an integrated Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) with embedded social workers, Mental Health Officers and allied health professionals. The Old Age Psychiatry team collaborates closely with other local and regional psychiatrists and participates in regular case discussions and senior clinician/management meetings.


Responsibilities

* Deliver comprehensive psychiatric care for patients over 65, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment and follow‑up.
* Provide outpatient and inpatient services at Larkfield Unit, Argyll Unit (memory clinic, outpatient, therapy services) and Orchard View (HBCCC).
* Lead and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in both community and hospital settings.
* Participate in regular case discussions, senior clinician and management meetings.
* Act as a trainer with recognition of trainer status; support higher trainer status if desired.
* Involve in teaching medical students from Glasgow University.
* Maintain on‑call commitment (1 in 25 non‑resident) as part of the regional rota.


Qualifications and Eligibility

* Full GMC registration, license to practice and eligibility for the Specialist Register (CCT or CESR).
* Experience or eligibility to act as RMO and AMP under the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003.
* Trainer status or willingness to undertake trainer training.
* Experience in old‑age psychiatry is preferred but not mandatory.
