Being a Volunteering and Community Officer is all about connecting with people. It’s about helping everyone to get involved and feel welcome at National Trust places. Working with volunteers and local communities, you’ll be making a vital contribution to the Trust’s cause of protecting and caring for places so that people and nature can thrive – now and into the future.
This role may involve managing volunteers. And you should be willing and able to work some weekends and evenings.
What it's like to work here
Reporting to the General Manager this is a 'desk job', but you'll get to work in some of the most beautiful settings at a very exciting time for our places, with great people.
The South Lakes portfolio covers - Hilltop, Wray Estate, Steam Yacht Gondola as well as a wider countryside estate that encompasses some of the Lake Districts most iconic landscapes like Tarn Hows, Claife and Little Langdale .
Our places are in fairly remote places, so please think about how you’d be able to get here for work, before you apply for this job. You'll be working across the portfolio supporting colleagues across all our teams.
We are a busy portfolio, and this is a very exciting time for us as both Hilltop and Wray have major projects seeking to refurbish and review the visitor offer. Our teams are committed and passionate about delivering excellence every day and ensuring our visitors have a memorable visit.
What you'll be doing
You'll work across departments to help deliver the Volunteering and Community plan and respond to agreed priorities, providing administrative, communications and event support.
You'll be working in collaboration with colleagues across all our discipline areas, such as programming, curation, gardens, estates and visitor experience. As well as supporting Volunteer Managers to ensure that volunteers have a great experience you will support the General Manager to ensure that we work closely with local communities, supporting stakeholder mapping and working with the four Parish Councils in the portfolio.
Who we're looking for

3. good at talking to, and getting on with, all kinds of people from all backgrounds, and you understand why great customer service matters
4. flexible and collaborative, a team player who’s happy to lead on and work with other people’s agendas towards a shared goal
5. well-organised, with good attention to detail
6. experienced in volunteering principles and practice
7. comfortable with IT skills (Microsoft Office), and managing budgets
