Technical Director – Ecology (Scotland)

A leading consultancy is seeking a Technical Director – Ecology to head up its Scottish terrestrial ecology team. This senior role oversees around 20 ecologists across three Scottish offices, supporting a varied portfolio of projects and shaping the long‑term direction of ecology services in Scotland.
The Role
* Provide senior technical leadership across major ecological projects
* Oversee project delivery, quality assurance, and compliance
* Review EIAR, HRA and other technical reports
* Support fee proposals, tenders, and client engagement
* Lead team performance, recruitment, and staff development
* Act as a key contact for statutory consultees and multidisciplinary teams
* Contribute to business planning, financial performance, and service growth
You’ll maintain oversight of 150–170 active projects annually, ranging from small assignments to major infrastructure work.
What You’ll Bring
* Strong experience in ecological consultancy and team leadership
* Deep understanding of the Scottish planning system
* Technical expertise in EIAR, HRA and ecological assessment
* Commercial awareness, including budgeting and forecasting
* Ability to mentor and develop staff at all levels
* Confidence engaging with clients, consultees, and partners
Experience with Public Local Inquiry/DCO processes, protected species licensing, or a recognised technical specialism would be beneficial.
