Job Overview
Harbor Point Behavioral Health Center engages in intensive residential treatment services for youth aged 7 to 17 experiencing emotional, psychiatric, and educational difficulties. The center offers general psychiatric programs and specialty programs for youths with more serious challenges. Harbor Point is fully accredited by The Joint Commission and the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Educational Facilities, licensed by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services and the Virginia Department of Education, and TRICARE approved and certified.
Position Summary
The Recreation Therapist will work evening and weekend hours and provide assessment, activity program development, and recreation therapy services to all residents.
Responsibilities
Develop recreation/activity programming for all residents.
Essential Functions
* Plan and implement therapeutic groups and programs to meet assessed resident needs as indicated in the Individual Service Plan and prescribed by Professional/Medical staff.
* Implement the Behavior Management Plan, assess and document students’ behavior progress, adjust strategies as needed, and collaborate with the treatment team to maximize behavioral success.
* Assess residents to interpret strengths and weaknesses in leisure skills, socialization, cognitive abilities, motor development, and physical condition.
* Maintain consistent communication with staff, parents/guardians, and local education agencies, consulting team members, attending meetings, keeping accurate records, completing reports, making phone calls, writing letters, and updating IEPs/IIPs.
* Participate in professional development activities, including on‑site training and relevant off‑site classes, workshops, etc.
* Display a high degree of professionalism in all activities and interactions with students, staff, parents, agency personnel, and community members.

Education and Qualifications
Minimum bachelor’s degree in activity/recreation therapy, art therapy, or music therapy with CTRS.
Licensure/Certification
* Current CTRS required
* Current valid driver’s license
* CPR, First Aid, and crisis management certification
Physical Requirements
Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Stand, walk, kneel, and reach while working with students for approximately 80–90% of the day.
Use full range of body motion, including handling and physically restraining students when necessary. Perform first aid and CPR. May require physical exertion during recreational activities. Must possess physical ability to assist in restraining residents. Must be able to operate a 15‑passenger van.
