Established in 1981, CMAA has been a cornerstone of the Uptown community, providing programming for generations of low-income youth, adults, and senior citizens. We offer direct services, including: afterschool & youth mentorship programming, job training & placement, elder care services, and social services such as citizenship & housing services.
Job Description
Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA) is seeking a mission driven ESL Instructor to support our Adult Education Programs. The Instructor will teach ESL classes of varying English proficiency to prepare students for life, work, and further educational goals. This person will demonstrate skills in lesson planning and delivery, cross-cultural communication, and a commitment to working with immigrant and refugee populations. This position is funded through a grant which time period ends 12/31/26.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
1. Plan, organize, and teach two ESL classes for limited English proficient adults - a mix of in-person and online per term, using online learning management systems for classroom instruction, a broad range of differentiated techniques, addressing Illinois ESL and ABE Content Standards, and ensuring that learners meet or exceed state-wide program metric.
2. Provide lesson modifications as necessary for ESL classes of varying English proficiency levels, using the BE curriculum as the primary curriculum and incorporating supplemental materials as needed, with support of management, Senior Instructors, and the Adult Education Team, and updating instruction according to student and industry needs.
3. Monitor student attendance, goals, referrals, and testing needs; work with CMAA staff to ensure that students are able to access a wide array of support services
4. Support student enrollment, retention and success by assisting with intakes, registration, and student orientation; administering testing and assessments for the purpose of evaluating student progress
5. Advocate on behalf of Adult Education students, providing working with Adult Education/Workforce Development team to identify opportunities for program growth
Requirements
Qualifications
6. Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (required)
7. Previous experience tutoring or teaching adults with limited English proficiency
8. Availability and flexibility to teach a mix of in-person and online, at varying times of day each term; the ability to adapt to changing work priorities
9. Proven ability to work both independently and as a team member, cooperating with and demonstrating cultural sensitivity to staff and constituents
10. Proficiency with Google platforms, Microsoft Office, and LMSs
11. Ability to work remotely, determined by the online class schedule and approved by supervisor; access to reliable internet
12. Fluency in a second language is a plus but not required
Work Environment
13. This job operates in a clerical, office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Physical Demands
14. This is a largely sedentary role, however some filing is required. This could require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bending or standing on a stool as necessary.

The approximate hourly rate for this position is $25.00/hour. Please note that the indicated base salary is provided in good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Final compensation may vary based on factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge, skills, etc.
