Using the maritime knowledge and expertise gained from your seagoing years to effectively advise Members on all aspects of safety, technical, and operational issues. You will work closely with a global network of marine surveyors, instructing them for attendance on Member vessels to evaluate the condition and operational status of a vessel and identify potential areas of P&I risk exposure. Support the Loss Prevention team in developing and delivering bespoke initiatives ranging from presentations, articles, and training seminars in support of our members and the maritime industry.
Responsibilities
1. Manage vessel condition surveys, management assessments, navigation assessments, and risk management reviews: liaise with underwriters, Members, brokers, and other appropriate bodies regarding surveys and assessments.
2. Support the Condition Survey Coordinator in identifying and proposing vessels for condition surveys.
3. Support the identification, selection, and instruction of competent surveyors and consultants for surveys, assessments, and reviews.
4. Review and interpret survey reports to identify potential P&I risks, making recommendations to the Head of Loss Prevention.
5. Record survey details in the company’s system and maintain relevant documentation.
6. Monitor and review survey files to ensure follow-up actions are implemented.
7. Provide monthly updates to the IG-Secretariat on surveys undertaken.
8. Identify vessels for programmed condition surveys.
9. Review data from maritime authorities to identify vessels that may be detained, blacklisted, or have classification issues.
10. Develop and author loss prevention articles, guidance notes, and posters.
11. Provide technical guidance to stakeholders and deliver presentations as required.
12. Conduct root cause assessments of large claims and document findings.
13. Perform other loss prevention tasks as directed by the Head of Loss Prevention.
Qualifications and Skills
1. Qualified and experienced Senior Deck Officer (STCW II/2) with a minimum of 4 years on ocean-going dry cargo vessels.
2. Operational knowledge of vessel types such as bulk carriers, containers, and cruise ships.
3. Understanding of IMO regulations, codes, and IACS rules.
4. Excellent written skills for producing high-quality technical articles and risk alerts.
5. Good presentation skills and confidence in public speaking.
6. Highly organized, self-motivated, and a team player.
7. Ability to work with people at all levels.
8. At least 2 years shore-based experience in a related field preferred.
9. Willingness to travel occasionally.
10. Professional registration is preferred.
11. Must have the right to work in the UK.
