As part of our commitment to the continued expansion of pharmacy and medicine at Bangor University, the newly formed North Wales Medical School seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Cancer Biology & Pharmacology to contribute to the development of our growing portfolio of research and programmes in medical, pharmaceutical and health sciences. Applications are invited from candidates with a PhD (or be near completion) and postdoctoral research experience in cancer cell biology, pharmacology, translational biomarker discovery, cell therapy, immuno-oncology, or related discipline. Candidates with research interests aligned with our established research centres are particularly welcomed.

Research and collaboration opportunities exist across the NWMS and within the North West Cancer Research Institute which houses well-equipped research laboratories, focused on the molecular mechanisms underlying cancer and translational research to improve cancer detection and treatment. The post-holder will also be expected to contribute to teaching undergraduate programmes as directed by the Head of School.

The post is full-time and permanent, and the successful candidate will be expected to commence as soon as practical. Applications will also be considered to carry out this role on a part-time or job share basis.

This role will be located on campus at Bangor. Through our Dynamic Working framework, there will also be the option to spend some time working remotely (although remaining in the UK) to support work life balance, which will be discussed further with candidates at interview.

In addition, the College boasts excellent teaching and research facilities.

North Wales Medical School

The North Wales Medical School is the focus for medical, biomedical, and pharmaceutical education and research at Bangor University. The school has a portfolio of programmes that continues to expand. These include the BSc in Pharmacology (first year of intake, 2023), Bangor University’s independent Medicine degree from 2024, and Pharmacy degree from 2025. The School’s research centres span medicines evaluation and optimisation, primary and palliative care, clinical trials, health economics, and cancer biology and pharmacology.

North West Cancer Research Institute (NWCRI)

The NWCRI Forms Part Of The NWMS And Focuses On The Molecular Mechanisms Underlying Cancer, Including Replication Stress, DNA Damage-repair, And Metabolic Reprogramming. The Postholder Will Be Supported By The NWCRI Which Includes a UKRI Future Leader Fellow And Success In Gaining Venture Capital Investment For Commercialization Of Biomarker And Drug Discoveries. Group Leaders At NWCRI Are Part Of The Wales Cancer Research Centre, Providing Collaboration And Funding Opportunities Within The Region. The University’s Newly Established Nuclear Futures Institute Provides Further Opportunities To Explore Research Synergies In Radiopharmaceutical Drug Development For Cancer Treatment. The New Postholder Will Have The Opportunity To Develop Collaborative Research Projects In Areas Of Existing Expertise Within The NWCRI, Including

Cancer biology: Mechanistic cancer discovery research, leading to identification of novel tumour cell vulnerabilities that can be exploited via the development of novel precision therapies. In relation to cellular repair of DNA damage induced by radiotherapy, research is focused on the study of the cancer cell response to therapeutic doses of radiation and DNA damaging chemotherapeutic drugs, and the identification of methods to improve radiation responses.

Anti-cancer pharmacology: Early phase discovery of novel precision anti-cancer agents, based on CRISPR screening systems in tandem with Next Generation Sequencing (e.g., drug candidates targeting MRE11, MRNIP and BRACHYURY) and on targeting vulnerabilities in cancer metabolism. In relation to drug toxicity, assays are being developed to assess the genotoxic impact of important anti-cancer (gemcitabine) and anti-viral (remdesivir and molnupiravir) nucleoside analogues.

Purpose of the Job


* To conduct and report on biomedical research of an international standard in cell biology, with substantial evidence of quality and international peer recognition.
* To teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including supervision of research projects and students
* To provide pastoral and academic support to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
* To undertake School and College leadership roles and other duties and responsibilities as directed by the Head of School of the North Wales Medical School.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Working with the Head of the North Wales Medical School, the post-holder will:

Research Duties

* Undertake collaborative research with colleagues within the North Wales Medical School, North West Cancer Research Institute, and external partners and networks.
* Manage one’s own research projects, with an emphasis on research output of a quality and quantity to contribute positively to the esteem and resources generated by Research Excellence Framework.
* Identifying sources of future funding and contribution to the process of successfully securing funds.
* Engage in scholarly and other relevant professional activities (e.g. Reviewer and/or referee for academic journals, contributor to academic conferences).
* Supervision of research students to completion within a range from undergraduate up to PhD level.

Teaching Duties

* Plan, prepare and deliver lectures and tutorials, responding effectively to a variety of student backgrounds, learning styles and class sizes.
* Motivate students to proactive engagement in learning and provide meaningful and constructive feedback on the quality of their work.
* Act as personal tutor to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Participate and plan the development of new teaching and learning materials.
* Initiate and take forward the development of new programmes.

Administrative And Wider Contribution Duties

* Participate in the student recruitment and induction procedures of the School (e.g. School and University Open Days).
* Contribute to the School’s management and participate in the administration of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (e.g. organisation of exams, contribute to accreditation/QA procedures (if module co-ordinator).
* Contribute to the marketing of programmes by participating in School and College link activities and other marketing initiatives.
* Undertake other duties and responsibilities as directed by the Head of School.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training

Essential

* PhD (or be near completion) and postdoctoral research experience in cancer cell biology, pharmacology, translational biomarker discovery, cell therapy, immuno-oncology, or related discipline.

Desirable

* minimum of 3 years substantial teaching experience for conversion to HEA Fellowship within 3 years of appointment or hold a PGCertHE teaching qualification (or equivalent) and / or HEA Fellowship recognition.

Experience/Knowledge

Essential

* Capability to develop and manage research projects, and a record of publication of molecular cell biology research in learned journals.
* Experience of teaching at higher education level with evidence of successful student learning outcomes.

Desirable

* Evidence of applying for and attracting and securing external funding for research.
* Experience of module development and delivery in higher education.
* Experience of supervising undergraduate and postgraduate projects.

Skills/Abilities

Essential

* Ability to demonstrate innovative and exciting approaches to teaching and biomedical research.
* Excellent verbal and written skills and demonstrable IT Skills as required (e.g. VLE techniques and other forms of learning technologies).
* Demonstrate an ability to communicate clearly in English, conveying ideas and concepts both verbally and in writing to a diverse audience.
* Ability to work effectively as part of a team and on own initiative.
* Demonstrate the ability to prioritise workload and work to deadlines.

Desirable

* The ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh is desirable for this role. If applicants are not able to speak/write in Welsh at present, there are many opportunities to learn if the successful candidate wishes to do so.
