Role overview

.

* The board certified veterinary behaviour specialist will be an integral part of the veterinary behaviour department.
* The veterinary behaviour specialist focuses on diagnosing and managing behavioural problems in animals using evidence-based methods.


Job Description


Consultation and Diagnosis

* Conduct thorough clinical behavioural assessments and consultations, including medical evaluations.
* Identify underlying causes of behavioural issues, such as medical conditions, environmental factors, or learned behaviours.


Treatment

* Develop individualized behaviour modification plans and treatment protocols.
* When appropriate and diagnosed, prescribe and manage medications to support behaviour therapy.
* Educate pet owners on implementing necessary intervention to address behavioural challenges.


Client & Stakeholders Communication

Partner with Primary Care Physician (PCP), certified animal trainers, and animal care professionals to ensure comprehensive care.

* Provide clear communication and training to pet owners about behaviour management techniques.
* Deliver ongoing support and follow-up to monitor progress and adjust treatment plans as needed.


Education and Training

* Train veterinary behaviourist residents and other veterinary staff on behavioural issues, safe handling techniques, and early intervention strategies.
* When available, to organize workshops, seminars, or webinars for clients.
* Stay updated on the latest research in animal behaviour and veterinary science.


Record Keeping and Compliance

* Maintain accurate and detailed medical and behavioural records for all cases.


Desired skills and experience


Education

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree.

* Specialization: Board certification from the American College of Veterinary Behaviourists (ACVB) or European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine or equivalent credential.
* Experience: Prior experience in veterinary behaviour consulting, or related roles.
