An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our clinical Coding Team.

The post holder will have a major responsibility for the delivery of a comprehensive training programme to the Trust’s Clinical Coding Department and external stakeholders. They will also actively engage clinicians and managers in the coding process via specialty-based workshops when required.

The post holder will be responsible for planning, developing and implementing the clinical coding audit program, involving and consulting with clinical coders, clinicians and managers to enhance the accuracy of clinical coding. The requirement is to produce consistent, accurate, meaningful and comparable data to help managers and clinicians in the monitoring, planning and provision of high-quality patient care.


Main duties of the job

* To be responsible for the development, detailed planning and delivery of training courses, workshops and ad hoc sessions to the clinical coding department and to develop and lead an in-house training programme.

* Deliver training and induction to all new staff in clinical coding and advise the Clinical Coding Manager on the best means to ensure the on-going training and complex development programmes of experienced coding staff, including acting as mentor and first point of contact for novice coders in their first year of employment.

* To be responsible for auditing the completeness, timeliness and accuracy of clinical coding throughout the division/ Trust, utilising the current Information Technology in accordance with the national coding conventions of ICD10 and OPCS4 national and international rules.

* To deliver a robust programme of audits and reporting/presenting all findings in an efficient way to the Head of Clinical Coding, the Clinical Coding Manager, the Clinical Coding Team, relevant directorate clinicians, Trust managers and the board.

* Produce formal audit reports within agreed timescales and make recommendations on how to improve Clinical Coding quality and accuracy.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

· To be responsible for the development, detailed planning and delivery of training courses, workshops and ad hoc sessions to the clinical coding department and to develop and lead an in-house training programme.

· Deliver training and induction to all new staff in clinical coding and advise the Clinical Coding Manager on the best means to ensure the on-going training.

· To monitor the progress of all coders, give them support and guidance, and highlight individual training needs.

· Ensure that all training sessions adhere to national coding standards and coders update and maintain their relevant coding manuals.

· To organise, train and work alongside staff in the use of existing Coding Classifications ICD10 and OPCS 4.

· As directed by the Head of Clinical Coding, liaise and attend meetings with clinicians and senior managers on a regular basis, to ensure that defined data quality standards are met and maintain on-going expertise.

· To take part in the induction of new junior doctors and in awareness and training sessions concerning the clinical coding service, promoting a wider understanding amongst other healthcare professionals.

· To support, advise and mentor trainee clinical coders.

· To check trainee coder’s work before it is put onto the system.

· To support, advise and train clinical coding staff in the appropriate use of medical terminology and the extraction of information from the health record.

· To actively review the training requirements of the coding team, supporting their progression towards the National Clinical Coding Qualification.

· To provide coaching for individual coders.

· To develop and deliver effective training to other staff within the trust to increase awareness and compliance with coding rules, including the development of in-house training materials.


· The post holder is expected to provide a national training service at other Hospitals throughout the country as and when required.

· Be responsible for the administration of national clinical coding courses and specialty workshop training materials.

· Be responsible for room booking for training courses.

· Maintain CCS Registered Trainer status.

· Deputise for the Departmental Clinical Coding Manager in their absence.

· It should be noted that this post could involve the lifting and transferring of patient records.

· Attend mandatory annual CCS Approved Trainer Forums.

· Support the collaborative work with One LSC, Lancashire Coding Collaborative, TCDS with regards to the delivery of training and audit services, QA of national training materials and designing case studies for national training courses.

· Support the coding budget and financial initiatives in the delivery of income generating training courses, as well as supporting the making of budget savings with the delivery of in-house, cost-free training.
