Team Lead Paediatric Occupational Therapist

Clinical Duties: To autonomously carry a designated clinical caseload of complex and diverse inpatient paediatric patients, presenting with neurological and/or functional deficits. Prioritize caseload efficiently, considering clinical and service priorities using highly specialist knowledge. Competent in assessing all domains of impairment, activity, and participation as per the ICF, and their impact on a child's occupational performance. Use standardised and non-standardised assessments, screening tools, and relevant outcome measures. Identify key performance areas for the child and family, formulate child-centred goals, and select appropriate OT interventions. Assess the need for and prescribe assistive technology or adaptive equipment, making recommendations to clients, carers, social services, schools, and educational institutions, ensuring safety and compliance with guidelines. Understand the impact of acquired disabilities on the child and family, providing training and advice on lifestyle changes and environmental adaptations. Monitor and evaluate interventions for progress and effectiveness, staying updated with emerging evidence and national guidance. Lead in producing clinical guidelines and policies, ensuring evidence-based practice. Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members and external support services, facilitating case management, stakeholder meetings, and service recommendations. Provide expert advice to other professionals to promote successful reintegration into community, home, school, and social environments. Assist with clinical coverage in other paediatric areas as needed. Promote child well-being and safeguarding, adhering to policies for reporting concerns, including those about colleagues.

Communication: Skilled in communicating with children of all ages and abilities, including those with cognitive or communication difficulties and challenging behaviours. Provide families and carers with specialist advice and instructions to promote understanding of occupational therapy aims and ensure consistent management, including the use of specialist equipment and therapy programmes. Share complex and sensitive information effectively with patients, carers, and professionals. Use effective communication strategies to maximize rehabilitation outcomes, including interpreters and visual aids. Establish strong communication networks with patients, families, care agencies, multidisciplinary teams, education services, and external agencies. Promote awareness of Occupational Therapy's role within the team, negotiate priorities, and participate actively in departmental meetings. Ensure open communication within the team and guide junior staff in effective communication skills.
