Overview
Due to retirement of the postholder, an exciting opportunity has arisen to lead, manage and develop the services and staff of the Radiation Physics Section of the North Wales Medical Physics Department. This section supports both ionising and non-ionising radiation activities of the health boards of North Wales, primarily Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The section provides specialist scientific advice and support for overall radiation safety, as well as to staff undertaking clinical services, in diagnostic and interventional radiology and cardiology departments, and to users of non-ionising radiations across the whole of North Wales.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Responsibilities
* Directs and manages the highly specialist scientific, technical and clinical services provided by the Radiation Physics Section across North Wales, including strategic development, operating with a high degree of autonomy;
* Advises on the scientific aspects of radiation equipment, including the design of facilities, procurement, commissioning, quality control of highly complex equipment, including safe and optimised use of radiation and future developments;
* Provides specialist scientific knowledge and support to staff undertaking services in radiation safety, diagnostic radiology physics, and non-ionising radiation physics;
* Responsible for the operational management of the Radiation Physics Section, including managerial and organisational duties, radiation safety leadership, service development, and teaching and training responsibilities as described below;
* Lead radiation safety responsibilities as the Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) to the Health Board, including liaising with statutory inspectors and providing guidance to senior managers following inspections;
* Coordinate planning and delivery of radiation safety support (ionising and non-ionising) and provide ongoing training to Medical Physics staff to meet regulatory obligations;
* Lead Health Board Radiation Protection Committees, submit agenda items and annual reports, and provide critical scientific judgement on radiation incidents;
* Oversee Radiation Risk Assessments for new and modified radiation activities, including design, shielding and protection advice for new facilities;
* Provide specialist advice to Project Managers on radiation protection requirements for planning of new or modified radiation rooms and complex risk assessments.
* Ionising Radiation Physics: provide scientific advice on imaging equipment, procurement planning for major capital items, advising selection, purchase and room design; oversee installation and commissioning of imaging equipment; act as Medical Physics Expert in diagnostic radiology under IRR17/IR(ME)R; support clinical research applications and radiology image optimisation teams.
* Non-ionising Radiation Physics: advise on departments using non-ionising sources (lasers, UV, MRI, ultrasound); oversee installation, commissioning, calibration, dosimetry and safety of equipment and environment, and compliance with national guidance.
* Policy and service development: maintain quality system involvement, develop operating procedures, advise on policy content for ionising/non-ionising radiations, and supervise training across staff groups;
* Research and Development: provide leadership for R&D in radiation protection and physics, liaise with national bodies, initiate and supervise trainee projects, and contribute to advisory groups and committees;
* Professional: maintain professional competence and registration, CPD, and perform other duties as required by the Head of Medical Physics.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
* MSc in medical physics or equivalent subject
* PhD or equivalent level of knowledge
* HCPC registration as a clinical scientist in a relevant field
* Certification as a Medical Physics Expert in diagnostic radiology
* Certification as a Radiation Protection Adviser (or able to gain certification within 12 months)
* Registration as a Consultant Clinical Scientist, i.e. on Higher Specialist Scientist Register, or equivalent level of knowledge and experience
Desirable
* Leadership and management qualification
* Corporate membership of IPEM or other equivalent professional body
Experience
* Essential: Considerable and broad ranging experience acting as a Medical Physics Expert in diagnostic radiology physics; specialist knowledge across radiation safety, non-ionising radiation and diagnostic radiology physics; advanced knowledge of clinical procedures in radiology; understanding of patient and staff risks; leadership and management of teams
* Desirable: Experience with quality management systems (ISO 9001); knowledge of non-ionising imaging techniques
Skills and Attributes

* Ability to manage diverse, highly complex activities and meet deadlines
* Fully competent in standard IT applications
* Welsh language skills are desirable
