Opportunity
Permanent Lead Bridge Engineer – Amey Consulting team. We welcome applications from Lead Engineers across Scotland.
Role
You will be an integral part of the Design team, working closely with Transport Scotland. As a Lead Engineer you will provide technical support to the Design Team Leader, lead projects, and mentor junior designers.
Responsibilities
 * Lead a team to deliver technically sound engineering solutions in compliance with all relevant technical standards and client requirements.
 * Prepare and check designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that meet quality, cost and programme criteria.
 * Oversee the work of junior staff and take responsibility for their actions.
 * Control budgets and manage costs associated with the production of deliverables, ensuring commercial success of projects within the portfolio.
 * Liaise with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attend progress meetings and respond to queries.
 * Contribute significantly to the preparation of bids and support the general work‑winning function.
 * Drive effective health and safety practices within the team.
Qualifications
 * Developed experience and expertise in bridge engineering, typically gained in a Senior Engineer role or equivalent.
 * Able to produce technically sound engineering solutions and supervise junior staff.
 * Knowledge of health, safety and welfare management, e.g. Amey’s Integrated Management System and Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.
 * Capacity to act as the day‑to‑day main engineering contact for a project; e.g. Contractor’s Responsible Engineer for Network Rail schemes.
 * Experience of design and specification processes with an ability to advise others and check designs to a high standard.
 * Proficiency with relevant software and analytical tools; able to review others’ work.
 * Strong understanding of CDM, risk assessment and hazard management.
 * Capability to act as Principal Designer where required.
 * People‑management skills – capable of supervising a medium‑sized, locally based technical team.
 * Professional status – Chartered or equivalent qualification is desirable and may be required on certain contracts.
