Location: Weald of Kent Grammar School operates on two campuses; Tonbridge and Sevenoaks. You will be required to work at both sites.
Role purpose: Working collaboratively with the Nurse, the Healthcare Support Worker will administer first aid and assist with patient care, including simple clinical procedures and supporting children with medical conditions such as diabetes, asthma and epilepsy. The role also includes maintaining computerised and paper records, and assisting with dispensing medications under the direction of the Nurse in line with school medication protocols.
Experience and attributes: Applicants must be a team player, empathetic, approachable, an excellent communicator, well organized and demonstrate initiative. A high level of confidentiality and integrity is essential, with experience in working with young people in a pastoral or medical setting and a minimum of 1 year experience. The role requires robustness to cope in often stressful or upsetting situations.
Scope: The person will be highly motivated and autonomous, able to work unsupervised during the school day across both sites in the absence of the school nurse, and will take on medical responsibility in the nurse’s absence. The Healthcare Support Worker will form part of the Student Support team, which includes Family Liaison Managers, School Counsellors, a School Nurse, Health Care Assistant, and Student Support Receptionists.
Main Duties And Responsibilities
* Administering medication
* Stock checking of medications including audits
* Administer first aid and care for pupils referred by staff or self-referred until they can return to lessons or are passed into the care of a parent, guardian, doctor, hospital etc and accurately recording all visits and treatment/advice given
* Mental health support for students when required
* Supporting students who are unwell with chronic health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, epilepsy and sickle cell disease and promoting the optimal health status of the students at the school
* Providing administrative support such as record-keeping and maintaining Health Care Plans
* Administration required for trips and visits, e.g. preparation of first aid and medical supplies, provision of medical notes for trip leaders
* Working collaboratively with the Student Support team
* Responding to calls and emails to staff, parents and other professionals involved in the student's care
* Attending training courses for students who suffer from complex health issues such as diabetes, epilepsy and asthma
* Triage and treat pupils reporting to other members of the Student Services team where relevant (e.g. mental health concerns delegated to the mental health support worker)
* Respond to emergencies, unwell or injured students or staff around the school site
* Co-operate with and maintain good working relationships with the multidisciplinary team and other Healthcare and Social Care professionals; maintain confidentiality and integrity, and refer queries to the registered nurse where appropriate
Provision Of Healthcare
* To ensure that high-quality and effective care is provided to both students and staff
* To observe and monitor the wellbeing of patients and report any physical, mental or emotional changes to the School Nurse and Learning Support team for further observation
* To welcome staff and students to Student Services in a friendly, reassuring and accommodating manner
* To maintain an environment that meets the needs of the patient
* To sustain patient confidentiality and be sensitive to personal health concerns
* To actively support the holistic well-being of all students
* To support the School Nurse in developing School provision for healthcare and wellbeing and ensure day-to-day student needs are met (e.g. access to sanitary products and care for minor injuries)
* To maintain the cleanliness of Student Services and use appropriate sanitation in line with current guidelines
* To liaise with external agencies as deemed appropriate by the School Nurse
* To store medical supplies and drugs effectively
Administration
* To adhere to statutory Health & Safety and Data Protection Legislation, including GDPR
* To assist with the organisation of First Aid training for relevant staff and file valid qualifications
* To ensure stocks of cleaning, pharmaceutical and clinical goods are maintained and order as required
* To ensure comprehensive notes and records are made regarding incidents/accidents and reported to relevant staff within confidentiality requirements
* To distribute First Aid supplies throughout the School as required
* To maintain general office supplies
