Job Title: Environmental Health Officer

Pay rate: £20.74 per hour PAYE
Role length: Anticipated 6 - 7 months
Additional requirements: Able to drive a vehicle and possess a full driving licence
DBS requirement: Enhanced DBS
The role: We are looking for an Environmental Health Officer or Enforcement Officer to join the Environmental Health Team covering complaints of pests, stopped up drains, filthy and verminous/hoarded properties, waste accumulations and public health matters. You will have thorough knowledge of environmental health procedures and practices in tackling environmental health related issues using a suite of interventions.
Key responsibilities
* Conducting inspections, investigations, and monitoring activities
* Providing professional advice, guidance, and enforcement action where required
* Changing behaviour through communication, education, and persuasion
* Scrutinising statutory applications and taking executive decisions under delegated powers
* Preparing legal cases, including evidence gathering and court representation
* Collaborating effectively with internal teams, external agencies, and the public
* Supporting service excellence and achieving performance targets
What the client is looking for
* A degree in Environmental Health (CIEH-accredited or equivalent), or a relevant environmental/occupational health qualification
* Strong, up-to-date technical knowledge in at least one area of Environmental Health, including risk assessment, quality systems, and environmental/safety impact analysis
* In-depth understanding of relevant legislation, enforcement tools, and regulatory practices within a local authority context
* Proven experience in inspections, investigations, data analysis, and handling non-compliance through formal and informal approaches
* Skilled in using influencing techniques such as coaching, persuasion, and mediation to address performance or compliance issues
* High level of accuracy in written and verbal communication, with excellent literacy, numeracy, and report-writing skills
* Confident with technology, including databases, spreadsheets, and standard office software
* Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build effective working relationships, manage conflict professionally, and contribute to a team-based environment
* Committed to customer service and continuous improvement
* Proven ability to solve problems, adapt to change, and contribute innovative ideas aligned with organisational goals
