Job Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Payroll / Accounts Supervisor. This role offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to organisational efficiency and employee satisfaction through meticulous payroll management and team leadership.

Ideally, you'll work Monday / Wednesday / Friday, 08:00–16:30. (half Hour Lunch)

We're flexible though — for the right candidate, hours and arrangements can be discussed and reasonable allowances made.

Purpose of the role

Own payroll and senior accounts activity end-to-end, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and on-time delivery. Provide hands-on supervision to the finance support team and keep deadlines, controls, and reporting on track.

Key responsibilities

* Run weekly/monthly payroll processes from start to finish (starters/leavers, timesheets, HMRC submissions, pensions, deductions, statutory payments).
* Maintain payroll records, reconcile payroll to the ledger, and resolve payroll queries quickly and confidently.
* Oversee purchase ledger and sales ledger workflows (posting, supplier payments, customer receipts, credit control support as required).
* Prepare and post journals, accruals, prepayments, and bank reconciliations; support month-end close.
* Manage VAT preparation support (where applicable), balance sheet reconciliations, and audit-ready documentation.
* Supervise and coach accounts staff: allocate work, review output, improve processes, and maintain standards.
* Strengthen financial controls, identify discrepancies early, and drive continuous improvement in systems and procedures.
* Liaise with external partners (accountants, pension providers, HMRC) and internal managers to ensure smooth finance operations.
* Be familiar with checking and processing subcontractor invoices and checking/deduction CIS contributions.

Required experience and skills

* Proven payroll and senior accounts experience in a busy environment.
* Supervisory experience (team leadership, task allocation, review/quality control).
* Strong working knowledge of UK payroll compliance (HMRC, pensions, statutory payments).
* Confident with accounting systems and Excel; accurate, organised, and deadline-driven.
* Clear communicator with a firm, practical approach to problem-solving and confidentiality.
* Experience with CIS payroll/returns (if relevant), VAT, and construction/contractor environments.

Desirable

* AAT qualified or qualified by experience.
* Experience improving processes and implementing system changes.
