The postholder is responsible for leading Heads of Department, overseeing subcontracted services, and acting as the senior interface between the healthcare provider and the prison establishment, ensuring strong partnership working, clarity of accountability, and high standards of care. The role holds overall responsibility for service performance, quality, governance, workforce leadership, and partnership effectiveness. Main Responsibilities Strategic & Operational Leadership Provide steady, visible leadership to guide the healthcare service. Translate national policy and commissioning expectations into practical, effective service models. Keep thoughtful oversight of service performance, risk, and emerging challenges. Leadership of Heads of Department Support and line‑manage Heads of Department with clarity and care. Ensure clear roles, responsibilities, and accountability. Encourage strong clinical leadership and collaborative teamwork. Governance, Quality & Safety Oversee governance processes to support safe, high‑quality care. Ensure incidents and complaints are managed with fairness and learning. Maintain oversight of clinical risks, escalating appropriately to clinical leads. Partnership with the Prison Serve as the senior healthcare partner to the Governor and prison leadership. Build respectful, constructive relationships that promote safety and dignity. Support clear boundaries between healthcare and custodial roles. Subcontract & Provider Management Oversee subcontracted healthcare services with a focus on partnership and quality. Ensure contractual expectations are met and monitored. Address any performance concerns in a supportive, solution‑focused way. Workforce Leadership & Culture Foster a culture grounded in psychological safety, dignity, and openness. Ensure staff receive supervision, support, and development opportunities. Encourage early escalation, shared learning, and continuous improvement. Regulatory & Commissioner Engagement As CQC Registered Manager: Act as the senior point of contact for regulators and commissioners. Lead preparation for inspections and coordinate responses. Represent the organisation with professionalism and credibility. The Ideal Candidate Essential Senior healthcare leadership experience. Experience managing multidisciplinary teams. Strong understanding of governance and risk. Partnership and stakeholder management experience. Ability to operate in high-pressure environments. Desirable Experience in secure or complex settings. Experience managing subcontracted services.
