Location
This role will be based in our Cambridge R&D Facility.
Job Role and Responsibilities
* Hands-On Skills: Utilise hands‑on skills to build, test, and troubleshoot complex systems.
* Inquisitive and Questioning: Demonstrate curiosity and the ability to ask critical questions to ensure a deep understanding of project requirements.
* Separation of Concerns and System Decomposition: Break down complex systems into manageable components, ensuring clear separation of concerns and facilitating efficient system design.
* Designing Experiments to Isolate Root Cause: Develop testing strategies and protocols to isolate root causes of system issues and drive effective problem resolution.
* Understanding Data: Analyse and interpret data to make informed decisions and recommendations for system improvements.
* Requirements & DFMEA: Work closely with cross-functional teams to define project requirements and perform Design Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) to identify potential risks and weaknesses in the system.
* CAD & Modelling: Utilize Computer‑Aided Design (CAD) software and modelling tools to create detailed system designs and prototypes.
* Simulation: Using a first‑principle understanding of thermal or fluid systems and tools like spreadsheets, FEA or CFD build digital models of subsystems to reduce the time from theory to a quality outcome.
Requirements
* Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, or HND/HNC, in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or a related discipline
* 1–3+ years of hands‑on engineering experience
* Building, testing, and troubleshooting physical systems
* Comfortable working in a lab or workshop environment
* Experience assembling prototypes or mechanical/electromechanical rigs
* Experience building and testing prototypes
* Proficiency with CAD tools
* Exposure to FEA/CFD or first‑principles modelling
* Strong analytical skills and experience designing experiments
* Ability to work across mechanical, electrical, and system‑level domains
* Experience with DFMEA or other structured problem‑solving methods
* A naturally curious, questioning mindset
