A key member of the stroke multidisciplinary team who assumes the responsibility and accountability for assessing, implementing and evaluating vital components of the clinical care for patients to meet their needs in a safe caring environment that promotes dignity, privacy and respect from admission to discharge patient care pathway.
The post holder needs to have specialized knowledge and skills about stroke management and familiarity with evidence-based practices and up to date guidelines in stroke care. It is also expected for the post holder to work towards his/her nurse prescribing competencies while working in this job role.
The post holder is expected to assist ward leaders in the management, training, and organisation of nursing work in the ward/department within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct. He/she is expected to supervise the working of stroke nurses, health care assistants, support workers, and support the training and assessment of student nurses, whilst demonstrating the trust values and behaviours at all times.
The post holders main responsibility is to identify and assess stroke patients following their admission to the trust via any source (i.e emergency department, GP surgery, direct admission, etc.) and ensuring that the appropriate stroke specific pathways, protocols and guidelines are implemented appropriately with particular focus on thrombolysis, thrombectomy and intracranial haemorrhage pathways.
Main duties of the job
* 1.1. Manage stroke emergencies and take lead role if necessary.
* 1.2. Takes appropriate action to manage emergency, summoning appropriate assistance where necessary.
* 1.3. Identify unsafe practice and respond appropriately to ensure a safe outcome.
* 1.4. Help in investigating clinical incidents, identifying key themes of complaints and put appropriate action plans in place within a reasonable time frame.
* 1.5. Manage own workload effectively, prioritising and using time management skills to ensure information is timely and accurate.
* 1.6. Participate in the education and development of other staff members.
* 1.7. Demonstrate and maintain up to date knowledge and skill in stroke nursing management.
* 1.8. Attend and contribute to monthly local stroke governance meeting and in quarterly regional meetings.
* 1.9. Actively contribute in organizing and in the delivery of post graduate stroke courses such as the stroke transfer training and stroke development course.

Person Specification
* -Current professional registration with stroke specific knowledge
* -Post registration teaching qualifications
* -Evidence of post graduate studies around stroke (stroke courses, simulation trainings for stroke, clinical skills)
* -Evidence of significant post registration experience in stroke care (3 year recent experience in an acute stroke unit environment)
* -Experience in the delivery of stroke specific training to other staff
* -Understanding of local and national issues relating to stroke care
* -Able to structure workload, plan and prioritise things to maintain an efficient service with minimal supervision
* -Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written with patients and with all the members of the multidisciplinary team
* -Be flexible and work independently and collaboratively as a member of the team
* -Able to utilise computer systems to communicate a range of information in a timely manner and effectively
* -Be able to use budgets appropriately
* -Demonstrates participation in audits and surveillance around stroke specific targets in both local and national levels
