About the role

Teaching Assistant Level 2 – visual impairment support and supporting any pupil that requires access to provision.

Responsible to: Class Teacher, ALNCo, Senior Leadership Team.

Location: 3-19

This post is advertised as a fixed-term contract, ending on 31 August .

To provide high-quality support to a child or young person with a visual impairment, enabling full access to learning, promoting independence, and supporting their educational, social, and emotional development within the classroom and wider school environment.

Main Responsibilities

1. Provide tailored support to meet the individual needs of the learner with visual impairment.
2. Adapt and modify classroom materials (e.g., enlarging text, tactile resources, audio format) to ensure accessibility.
3. Support mobility and safe movement around the school environment, where appropriate.
4. Use specialist equipment and technology (e.g., magnifiers, screen readers, Braille equipment if applicable).
5. Work closely with the class teacher to plan, deliver, and review learning activities.
6. Encourage independence, confidence, and resilience in the learner.
7. Support the learner’s social interaction and emotional wellbeing.
8. Liaise with external specialists (e.g., Sensory Service, VI specialist teacher) as directed.
9. Maintain accurate records of progress, support provided, and any concerns.
10. Follow school safeguarding policies and contribute to a safe, inclusive learning environment.

Essential:

11. The ability to work through the medium of Welsh is essential for this post.
12. Experience of working with children or young people.
13. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
14. Understanding of the needs of learners with visual impairment.
15. Ability to adapt materials and support learning needs.
16. Patient, caring, and proactive approach.
17. Ability to follow guidance and work as part of a team.

Desirable:

18. Experience working with children with ALN/SEN.
19. Training in visual impairment or sensory needs.
20. Ability to use specialist VI equipment or software
