About the role
The post is based in the Experimental Studies group within the Airway Disease section of the NHLI. The team are leading experts in the cell and molecular biology of a number of respiratory conditions including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This research nurse will be involved in Severe asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease research (COPD), including studies which are currently ongoing as well as setting up new studies.
What you would be doing
The post will be to phenotype severe asthma patients and investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying these phenotypes using sate of the art transcriptomic, proteomic and primary cell-culture based techniques. You will be directly involved in the recruitment, education and monitoring of trial patients and in the collection and documentation of accurate data. You may also be asked to work on other studies, based on your caseload and capacity to take on extra work. As well as working with clinical investigators, you will also work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary care teams involved in the management of clinical trial patients on studies to which you are assigned.
What we are looking for
* To be compassionate and understanding of every patient and their family ensuring a sound ethical base for the research they are participating in
* To advertise for and recruit patients suitable for clinical studies of Severe asthma and COPD
* To screen the patients against the inclusion and exclusion criteria
* To obtain clinical histories and samples following enrolment
* To carry out and/or assist with clinical procedures within clinical trials including: phlebotomy, sputum induction.
* Instructing patients recruited to trials on study procedures
* To collect and record clinical data from patients by developing and updating databases.
* To ensure systems are in place to store and back up study data appropriate.
To develop strategies to identify patients for clinical studies..

This is a part- time (0.8FTE 29.6 h/w) and a fixed-term role (18 months) based at the Royal Brompton Campus (NHLI)
The post holder will be a highly motivated individual who will work directly under the supervision of Professor Fan Chung in collaboration with Dr Pankaj Bhavsar. The vision of the PRISM consortium, led by Prof Chung, is to introduce precision medicine to severe asthma by taking advantage of the great strides made in the molecular phenotyping of asthma by several consortia including U-BIOPRED that has taken a systems approach to describe the finger-prints (single-omics) and hand-prints (multi-omics) of severe asthma. The PRISM Consortium aim to bring 'the right treatment to the right patient at the right time' and newer effective treatments for severe asthma.
