Job overview

Salary – Band 7 inc. HCAS and £5,000 short term RRP (pro-rata) which is reviewed annually.

Contract: 7 days 12-hour contract (usual to compress hours into 8am-6pm or 8am-8pm shift patterns, which includes 1 weekend per month)

Location: Based at The Royal London Hospital with cross site rotation to Mile End and St Bartholomew’s Hospitals

An exciting opportunity has arisen for highly motivated and adaptive Sonographers to join our friendly and diverse ultrasound team. Obstetrics ultrasound experience is essential, and we welcome applications from various professional backgrounds including Midwife Sonographers. Experience and skills in General, Gynaecology, Small parts, DVT and Musculoskeletal is also desired.

All successful candidates will be supported by a preceptorship program based on their level of experience and skills. Candidates must hold either a Pg Cert / Dip / MSc or DMU qualification in Medical Ultrasound and professional registration with a statutory regulated body (such as the HCPC, NMC) or the Register for Clinical Technologists.

All staff members are required to participate in the 7-day service, and it is usual to compress hours into 8am-6pm or 8am-8pm shift patterns, which includes 1 weekend per month.

Novel ways of working and role expansion to develop enhanced and advanced clinical pathways are both supported and encouraged.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team in Imaging, liaising with those involved to ensure that appropriate imaging, reporting and management of the patient is provided when and where necessary. They will maintain a high professional and technical standard of ultrasound imaging with cross site rotation covering The Royal London Hospital, St Bartholomew’s Hospital and Mile End Hospital.
Our Sonographers undertake clinical work within established quality standards of practice, adhering to Ultrasound guidelines such as those published by BMUS, RCOG, RCR and NICE. The post-holder will work within departmental protocols as a practitioner in the delivery of all ultrasound imaging, reporting and management of the patient.
The post-holder will also liaise with key Lead Nurses, Obstetricians and Gynecologists in the Women’s Health Division, as well as the Radiologists in the General Ultrasound Department.
In the absence of a Lead Sonographer, the post-holder will oversee the day-to-day workload to ensure staff and resources are allocated to the area and managed effectively.
The post holder will promote patient advocacy and communicate effectively with other health care professionals together with outside agencies regarding patient care and progress.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. Post Graduate qualification in Medical Ultrasound
2. Current and up to date state registration through a regulatory body (HCPC; NMC or GMC) or through the Register for Clinical Technologists

Desirable criteria

3. To hold a BSc Hons degree or DCR in Diagnostic Radiography
4. PgCert MSK non injection ultrasound
5. MSc in Medical Ultrasound
6. DQASS Nuchal Translucency certification

Knowledge/Experience

Essential criteria

7. An up-to-date knowledge of current and emerging ultrasound techniques and relevant topics / professional issues
8. Able to demonstrate the ability to carry out and report on a full range of ultrasound examinations in Obstetrics, Gynaecology, General Abdominal and Small Parts
9. Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable criteria

10. Training in vascular ultrasound.
11. Training in MSK ultrasound
12. Experience of post graduate teaching.
13. Attendance of a clinical supervisor course.

Skills

Essential criteria

14. High level inter-personal and communications skills.
15. Able to work collaboratively with other disciplines.
